I'm so sick of this
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:21:20 am »
I'm tempted to go to console, honestly!

None of the games I want to play will run anymore.  GTA IV gives me a fecking XP error even though I'm running Vista.  Googled, tried fixes, nothing.

AA3... crashes upon joining any server, every time.

IL2 has decided to stop running on Vista for me.

Race07 series still has problems with my pedals.

I'm seriously considering getting a goddamn xbox once I make some money.

/drunken rant

 Go back to XP. lol

Personally, I have no intention to go beyond it until I "HAVE" to!!

Considering I went to this from WIN98SE............

I'm going to put the wheel, the flight stick, and all my PC games that I have discs for up for sale.  It is just too bad you can't pawn your steam account.

I know what you mean m8.. There is a good reason why i do most of my gaming on consoles atm.. Its perfect for many kind of games.. Of course pc has lot of gaming experiences consoles could never have.. but its also vice versa. I wouldnt go as far as dropping pc entirely m8, and im sure its just the frustration getting to ya atm.. Think about all the flying sims, racing sims and shooters.. All reason enough to play with pc, despite continuous struggle.

The only time I have had a large problem that drove me insane was when I was trying to play GTA4 for the first time. It took a nights worth of sanity from me, and as a post somewhere on this site documents, I was very angry about it. I also still have a problem with the original STALKERS (runs choppy, I have no idea why) and fought with Oblivion at one point because it keep crashing and running choppy (I had to uninstall some codecs I had-strange such things would screw a game up like that). Other than that, I have had a charmed PC gaming life. I run XP, I hope my good luck dose not run out when I go to Win7.

Open an administrative command prompt and enter:
winmgmt /verifyrepository

If you see WMI repository is consistent then don't worry about the next bit.

If you see WMI repository is inconsistent then run this command:
winmgmt /salvagerepository

Restart, and see if that helps :)

I have noticed that programs do some odd things should there be an issue with Vista's Security Center.

I am at my wits end.  I honestly feel like everything is stacking against me at the moment.  I have been drinking heavily, and I'm sure I'll regret this... but I'll be sent to hell if there isn't some unforseen force striving to see me fall apart.

I've attached a screen of what I see through this PC now.  I have tried reinstalling graphics drivers, bios for the MB, and everything.

This is more than I can handle at the moment.

Oy, knobrot.... get yer act together.

1. Get on a 'to rent' site and rent an image of xp sp3.
2. Back up your stuff
3. Burn the xp image.
4. Create a dual boot according to these instructions
5. Be happy again.

This could also be a hardware issue (as the issue is there in 2D!), switching to XP won't help in that case... It's too bad I live so far from your place Marcus, maybe there is somebody else at SJ who can help Marcus.

BTW: GTA IV is one of the worst console ports, so I wouldn't base any conclusions on that game  :tut:

True, but engaging a dual boot will, at the very least, eliminate software issues and point directly to the hardware. :)

I think I've narrowed it down to a graphics card issue.  Now I'm wishing two things.  First that I had registered with EVGA for the extra year warranty, and second that I had returned it a while back when I first suspected it had problems.

Here's what I've got.  I've uninstalled the new drivers that I installed a couple days ago.  I then wiped all traces of them.  Upon trying to reinstall I get an error saying that nvidia can't find any hardware compatible with the drivers.  So I guess my 8800Gt is actually dead.

:(

Tomorrow I'll call them and plead my case as an inexperienced PC owner who never had a real PC, and pray they'll show pity on me for a replacement.

Oh yes, and since uninstalling my drivers the site now looks normal.  Except it's in permanent 800x600 mode :(

Managed to bump up the resolution to a readable level, but colors are still messed.  Anyway, at least I can browse the site.

This is the error I get when trying to install drivers for the video card:

"The Nvidia setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware."

None of the fixes google turned up seem to help.  Bah!

I usually test the hardware (OCCT for cpu, memtest for memory, furmark for graphics card) and I also have spare parts of course  :)

Anyway, the screenshot that Marcus showed us reminds me of a death graphics card I once experienced. I have some 7900GT's as spare parts btw  :)

I assume that you did try to install some older version GFX drivers? Say 2-3 moths back?
I assume you did youse driver cleaner to remove all nVidia based stuff before you installed them drivers.

I also assume that someone will send you a GFX card until you can replace your 8800GT.

And then I will again assume that you are a fart. And I love you.

Marcus,

not sure if this will help at all???

but i have found that  with vista, i don't uninstall current gfx drivers, d/l the new drivers to a seperate d/l folder, then run the d/l'd file, follow the on screen prompts, use a registry cleaner to clean up and finally restart pc. this works for me every time as i had what appears to be the exact same problem you're getting.

so exact, i even took my 4870 back to the shop 3 times for a replacement lol, eventually i put the original 9800gt back in and let it find the drivers automatically with windows update, then just d/l'd and installed new drivers.

I know I can't play San Andreas. The PC version has unusable controls. So I got a TV tuner card so I could play my PS2 version. The PC disc now gathers dust.

Did you remove any game controllers before firing it up? If your wheel is still plugged in then the menu selections just keep looping.

Yeah, I also tried 3 different controllers and one I ordered just for it. (XBox controller for PC) Did some Googling and found out it's normal and there's no way to fix it. There was a supposed download to fix it, but it didn't work either.

I fired up my computer about an hour ago.  I tried to install the graphics drivers again, but it still said there was no hardware there.  I had even taken out the card, and reseated it.  I resided myself to just browsing the web, and started tooling around the site.

Out of nowhere I get a message from Vista saying it needs to reboot.  It was a dialog box I hadn't seen before, but I let it reboot.  When it came back to life there was a little nvidia icon shining at me from the bottom right of the task bar.  I then tried to install the graphics drivers again, and it worked this time.

I just tried running COD and it worked ok.  It seems things are working for now.  I am still going to call EVGA here in a moment and try to get something replaced though.  I don't want to have that happen again.

One thing I hadn't realized last night is that the power went out twice here yesterday while my PC was on.  I really need to invest in an APU.

For now, I'm happy it's working.  I'm never going to shut it off again though!

Power outage and shutting it off... aren't the same.... you know that, right?

Keep shutting it off (clearing the cache and such), and every once in a while, when you update the graph drivers, install them to a different directory, i take the date on which i install the drivers and put that after the name like:    c:\Nvidia270609
As i had it once so far that updating graphicsdrivers didn't work, even got my card checked out by the shop.. when i reinstalled them to a diff directory:  hey presto, they worked..

Now i ask you, why would are bossmann have to worry when he gets on track?

I'm pretty sure he frantically looks at the ventrilo list to see "who's on"  and then sort of shits himself with the thought of everybody beeing nice to him (because he's a very nice guy!) and somehow the prospect of just horsing around doesn't seem to appeal to him anymore..

talking about beeing sick of something.. and you know this shordy!   Getting me to not put my attention to GTL, then pulling out when the 50 minute race is already in it's 22nd minute... well done shordy..  you've so completely advertised where i should put the next rocket in GTA!  :grr:

Ok.. nough ranting..  hey Marcus, you haven't outgrown us junkies now have you?  there's a lot of guys waiting to meet up with you, you can make mistakes m8, yer the boss! hehe  use that to your advantage and especially as an excuse!

:)  I'll get in there soon.  I have a seat coming that needs a review!  lol

Ok so here's the latest.  The last few times I have booted up my PC it starts in a 1024x768 resolution.  I then have to change it manually back to the proper setting.  Twice it's reverted to the dismal image posted in the start of this thread.

Mr. Mallender Sr. has kindly offered me a replacement card.  In fact he has already shipped it, and it should be here Tuesday.

My plan is to make every effort through EVGA that I can in order to get the card replaced under warranty.  I'll be using the backup from Kevin to verify that it is indeed the card causing the issues.  Additionally I'll use it during any time it takes to get the original replaced... assuming they warranty it.

Thank you so much Kevin.  I will let you know when it arrives.  I'll be calling EVGA on Monday to try and work this out.  I hope it works!

Good luck! EVGA are very good with their waranty service so long as you registered the project when you bought it, i broke a header on my mobo and they fixed it for free.
