It's here!!! :D

http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=1970%20World%20Sports%20Car%20Championship

There may not be any download links yet since there is one corrupt file in the FileFront download. Their original rar has no issues, so they are working on it.

Go to their forum to get updates: http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=1168

Wow! Pretty cool mod. I don't rFactor much anymore, but this one tempted me. The graphics aren't the best, but the physics are pretty good. Don't expect modern handling. As Hobbs (I think?) once said about these LeMans cars, they were not made for turning or stopping.  lol Understatement. But 370+kph down Mulsanne straight is pretty insane. The rise before Mulsanne corner can have you sailing into the armco at race ending, car killing speed if you keep your foot in it. Primarily because you will be about 1 meter airborne! I haven't messed with setups yet, but the brakes in stock setup are insane. They want to lock up at a touch, and pull viciously to the right under high speed braking. You really have to leave tons of room for braking. Late braking gets you nothing but instant understeer slide through the corner and off the track. I'm sure there's a trick to driving these things, but I didn't find it yet. They are a handful.
This mod would really take a bunch of practice to be able to run a race in the 5000's without piling up. Repeatedly. Maybe I'm just rusty in my rFactor skills dunno?

I would really like to have a 1970's era Le Mans track to run these on, but VLM's 79 version is nice to drive. I think pole in 1970 was in the 3'19 or 3'20 range in the 917L. The best I managed after an hour of messing around was 3'40. It's as it should be. I'm no Vic Elford after all.  :)

Not sure JB, but I think the 917 had discs. (heads for google) http://www.rickcarey.com/Catalog%20Descriptions/Christie%27s%20Porsche%20917LH%20917-043.htm

yep discs. Also in the link they discuss the prototype Can-Am Porsche built and how it's "high chunky shape" helped solved some of their handling problems for the 917K&L projects. I read somewhere else top speed was 390+ kph. hmmm tuning to be done as I was getting "only" 370.
To hear and see these machines in person back in the day must have been magnificent.

Riv, the 1100hp 917/30 will probably be left in our dreams, lol.
Downloading mod now, I've spent considerable time with the "LM70" mod for GTR and Rfactor, I'm very interested how this one is recieved, my favorite era of racing bar none. I needs me a working "Flux Capacitor"

Its a little more than 1100bhp, it was *restricted* to 1100bhp for racing reliability!

Quote
1,580 bhp (1,180 kW) with twin turbochargers run up to full boost, a simply astonishing 39 psi, though it usually raced with around 1,100 bhp (820 kW) at 7,800 rpm to preserve the engine. The 917/30 dominated the Can-Am series during the 1973 season. The 917/30 could go from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 mph (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 260 mph (420 km/h) +

In 1975 Mark Donohue ran a 917-30 around the 2.66-mile (4.28 km) tri-oval Talladega Superspeedway, in Talladega, Alabama setting a closed course land speed record of 221.160 mph (355.923 km/h). The record stood for four years.

Sure, go and do the logical thing by using a search engine  lol Thanks for the info Steve ;)
 :)

Don't get me wrong, these cars are great fun but something tells me they will be a challenge for me to set up for race... I like a challenge. :D

You're correct Riv, but few people understand how truely "Brutal" that car really was, today's electronics can tame anything, but back then, an ordinary "human" was deathly worried about their life expectancy being rather short if the 917 was on the menu. I can't blame them, it was a vehicle built for purpose under the rule book at the time, and was the first race car outlawed by most if not all organizations. It has always been "Mythic" to me.
Anyways.. I'm testing with it now and loving every second of it's new formation.

Kevin.

Here are some 1970 race tracks that the CSGT have been working on. They are all WIPs, but still very nice. :)

Got this mod yesterday too  :). You definitely have to be in a GPL mindset to drive these things(which i personally love). And finally an rfactor mod that teaches you how to hold back. It's probably going to be it's curse though since i doubt it's gonna stay popular for long with people complaining about the handling characteristics of the "brutes". When i first tried the 917 on CSGT's Le Mans 70 track i kept smashing it on the tetre rouge armco. Try after try, same thing. And after a while of endlessly writing off the car i was like "Hold on a second...I know I've experienced that before... :hmm:. Why of course... first laps on GPL  :|" So all i had to do was summon that old feeling of intimidation and immediately things changed  :D. Sure it's a little rough around the edges, sure some sounds might not be perfect. but i really appreciate that sense of satisfaction when you finally turn a lap (even if it's the outlap...which for some odd reason is almost always better than the flying lap  :dunno:). Kudos to the team for making something that actually takes time to adapt to. Me like a lot  :)

Very nice description Marc.
I only did one lap in the mod yet. Le Mans 77 Alfa T33, .....indeed a handful! Great!
I am pleased to see that they don't make the graphics to hard for medium/low end computers like mine but this is to much or to little rather, I think.

The difference between track and car is to big now I think.
Maybe it's a setting I miss? I hadplayer detail to full, track also full.

Caspar.

Someone released a new set of 'cubemaps'(whatever they are), judging from the screens it looks quite a bit better with them: http://www.virtualr.net/cubemaps-for-world-sportscar-1970-released/

Haven't tried the mod properly yet, just had a quick check whether it worked after installing it.

Wow, thanks, BIG difference!

In replay the numbers still look blurry but while driving it's superb.
Bit on the bright side but very pretty.

Indeed mad! (def will try it tho) :rotfl:
Thanks for the links guys. Cubemaps prettied it up nice and the CSGT tracks look ready made for the mod. It would be fun to do some enduros in the future at these tracks.
I tinkered a bit more and found myself setting brake bias further and further rearward. Also really working the brakes instead of being a big puss on them. It almost seems like they need to heat-in to work.  ;) If true, nice touch! Also the heating of the tires seems to make a big difference in this mod.

Then, the big discovery for me. In options you can set tranny to simulate manual H pattern and clutch. WooHoo! Oh yeah the feets be dancin' cause if you don't heel/toe on down shifts the rear locks up big time.  lol Awesome, and getting addictive. If this is what GPL was like, it's no wonder the cult status.
