rFactor Hosting and Norton Security
« on: August 16, 2009, 02:33:07 am »
I am having a problem hosting rFactor. I figured it is Norton that is giving me the problem.  People have been telling me they keep getting a timeout when they try to enter the game. I have no password.

What I  now have done is made some configuration changes in Norton and I was wondering if anyone would like to spend a few minutes sometime to see if they can enter the host.

I really need this to work because I want to host a series and rFactor has more of the tracks I need for the events.

The title alone sounds VERY conflicting to me.

Ehm.. you've not mentioned anything about ports.

If you dont know what i mean... well... when hosting you need to open ports for ppl to connect to, Norton could be one of the reasons, but if you've got Rfactor set to "allow" in Norton, chances are that program lets it through.... but it can also still block a whole load even IF allowed access.

Find your router/modem model and type, go to http://portforward.com/ and follow the steps.

hope you get it working.. and i guess i'm too late now eh?  just waking up

What I have done was change the setting to allowed, it was set to custom. I am not using a router.

I will set up a host while I am at work. If someone would like to see if the can get on.

Host name: Great White North Racing
Cars: NAGT
Track: St Jovite (Downloaded from  Simjunkies )

Just leave a message here what happened. I cross my fingers it will work.

I just checked and don't see your server listed.
I did the port forwarding thing and every other thing to try and get hosting to work and could never manage it.

Yes - rFactor hosting is a tricky one.  Many have tried and many have failed.  Jarkko or Cato might be able to help - But like Pete, I've never made it work.

Norton is evil  (Just like ZoneAlarm)

Anyway, rFactor, GTL, GTR2 hosting works the same way, the only thing needed is port forwarding on your router. Of course firewalls might interfere as well, so try to disable the firewall or even uninstall the firewall and see if that helps.

Well I guess I'll have to buy server time again. I know I can get GTR2 working but the tracks are all on rFactor.

Every year I have around 4 series from the end of October to March. This year one of series of events  is the Canadian  Track Tour.  Vancouver, Toronto, Mosport, Montreal, Mont Tremblant, and hopefully Sanair and a couple others I am still looking for. I am working on a car selection.

Thanks for your time.. I'll putter around with this for a little while longer.

Doug if you are hosting from your game and not a dedicated server you will need to edit a line in your multiplayer.ini file... I think it is this one:

Announce Allowed="0" // servers should pass the firewall test before being allowed to list on the matchmaker

I think the 0 should be changed to a value of 1

Before editing your multiplayer.ini file please make a copy of the original first

Kristof... Sites with racing servers that will sell usage of them. Like last year I used Race2Play servers. It cost me around 80$ CDN for 2 months. I had 24/7 online server.
