Race Driver Grid, actually driving it.
« on: May 31, 2008, 08:36:01 am »
Some of you have noted from the demo that the steering is sloppy.. well.. yer right.. this is after all an arcade..

My settings..as far as i can remember them.

Got the G25 set at 300 degrees..

ingame:    Force 40
   steering weigh 10
            effects  50

Deadzone's all at 0%
Saturations all at 100%
Linearity  -10   yes.. you've read correctly .. MINUS 10

As i'm doing this via memory i might check this in game again and note if i had these settings correct..

The driving itself.. it's sloppy indeed.. i've tried the american musclecars on spa and well.. the blurr effect is nice.. but takes real getting used to, i did however in singleplayer note a considerable frameloss in the same corner where other racinggames have troubles too.. the long downhill righthander at SPA.. plus.. the layout wasn't what i expected... ahem.. so i ... ehr.. used a very original feature of the game, namely FLASHBACKS
If you drive into a barrier at high speed, as i did.. ahem.. all offa sudden the screen froze..with a cool effect and  i was handed options.. either i restart the race... call it quits.. or.. the cool feature.. a flashback (seems for the races i've done at absolute beginnerlevel you get 4 flashbacks)
it's a sort of instant replay and whenever you think you "forgot" to brake.. you hit F12 and voila.. ya get to instant brake again and hopefully not be crashing.. nice feature.. obviously for offline practice.... as i'd probably be bored outtof my skull if someone where to hit the damned F12 online 4 times in a row.. then the next one and the next one... and so on.... meaning a 4 lap race could take about the time you normally do 8 in.
Ah well.. the graphics are nice, i've got the feeling my 8800 GT 320mb cant really keep up with it.. i've also noticed this in other games a bit.. so i might be looking at a graphics upgrade anyways... no not especially for this game.. it's isn't as good yet.

Drifting... well.. the not drifting car that i drove the musclecar had the NOT ability to drift.. as soon as it went sideways and i'd like to hangon to the drift it felt like the car autocorrected me, allthough i've turned all aid-thingy's off, normally you'd try and get the car to make it follow the front wheels again as you overcorrect a bit and slam the wheel back to neutral trying to fish out where it will go next..( split second decisions those are..) but now as i overcorrected the weight of the car should still be leaning to the right.. i overcorrected to decrease the drift.. yet the weight and cardirection instantly reverted to making a right hand corner as i was drifting through a left hander.. thus resulting in me slamming the barrier headon.... TRICE! grrrr.... ah well.. just gotta get used to it, it's got a nice damagemodel, yet it doesn't translate much to the car's handling... so trash em all ya want.. theyll still race.. allthough knowing the Racedriver series you WILL be slower in terms of speed.

gonna have some more practice and see what i can dig up.. hopefully i have the above settings correct.. but if someone comes up with something that's more likable... please give me a tip as i'm getting pretty anoyed with something that wont feel or react the way i want it to... specially a controller... would be a big sin to unlatch the G25 and throw it across the room as some do to theyre controllers if they cant win.. but then again.. i'm no kid in a pram..hehe

Grinn.. my best friend is here and he dudn't like shifting.. or a wheel for that instance.. so we tried it his way...

Get all the assists on, Automatic gears included... linearity to +10  and keys is awsome... you really get to race competitive like that.. doing that with a wheel might take a helluva lot of time... but ill try eventually...

right now we're blown away by graphics and such...

destruction races were pretty awsome, yet only on one track with two variations, short and long.. long seems to have more.. how do i put this.. "damage"

Found out that keys is definately slower... because of the full lock that the game throws the steering to when you "key" it to the left or right together with throttle, the revs and km/h go down quite rapidly. I think it depends on the class you race, as with drifting the keys were awsome and the wheel struggled... i guess a pad would be awsome.. post yer findings here Jarkks.. also the way you've set up your pad once you've figured out what feels best.

peter and me have been at GRID from about 2 pm.. it's now1.20.. he left 15 mins ago.. we've had one helluva nice lightning/thundershow just now.. i guess Tys is seeing almost half of it now.. and i think Cas might be seeing it in the north.. it hit Apeldoorn fully.

Gotta "lay off the grid" for a bit now guys.. good night! :hats off:

Argh.. played several hours straight.. very good arcade games.. and nice eyecandy.

Yeah im using the gamepad.. Left analog stick for steer and right for brake/throttle.
No aids, manual gears. Linearity up to 3-4 is ok.
Handles great, allowing rapid moves but making it possible to be smooth also.
Enjoying it helluva lot.. the career mode is made very nicely.. i just got a teamm8 in it.. some shitty driving englishman called Seth... ill boot his ass and get a better teamm8 next time i fire up the game me thinks.. but yes.. gotta sleep too occasionally.
Oh yeah.. Running it maxed, 4xMSAA and 16AF forced from drivers.. smooth as hell, great fps and not a single stutter the whole time i played.  thumbs up

Guess it's the vidcard.. ill be buying that 9600 from you! hahahaha

or is there something else reasonable priced coming out... of which of course i could buy two instantly so i'd finally have a dual setup?

Could be the lack of vid mem for you.  :?:
I dont know if it really makes sense for you to upgrade yet, allthough 2x9600gt wouldnt maybe cost as nearly as much as fastest cards of the moment but should give pretty nice oomph.
Getting one of the two core gfx cards though would give still more powah i guess!  :?:

EDIT:Quickly checking, your gfx card should be more powerfull than mine, so it has to be lack of video ram. Tough call, i cant justify myself upgrading yet.

I love EVERYTHING about this game except the Physics :(, Its a treat for the senses. Great Look, Some of the BEST 5.1 sounds I have ever heard. REALLY good FFB effects, Great pedal response, but CM's usual retarded wheel setup....

lol
Thats why i dont even try to play it with the wheel.. its so funny. its pure arcade game. Everyone disapointted with the game are those who desperately try to force themselves in using the wheel! never has worked in ANY codemasters game (starting with first race driver), never will!
Its quite nice with a gamepad, PC is really missing these good arcade racers.. well.. im also using gamepad in TDU and any other non-simulation so im biased and used to it though..

EDIT:Im starting to think, since its so absolutely amazing in almost every area, maybe thats the reason why its so hard for some to accept that they are not well.. maybe its not for everyone.
Allthough i can see someone coming up with some fixes, so maybe theres hope for wheel users too!
Colin Dirt got helluva lot of different community fixes, for physics etc. So wait a little, im sure it happens again since most likely same game engine, and many many people disapointted with the physics.  thumbs up

Well, I use the wheel with Steinys setup and it works just fine.
When driving a racing game I will not use a gamepad...... Just a fobia I have got.

But the game is good. and yes. singleplayer mode is very good...

i play  the game grid ,the graphics are amazing and the singleplayer is very  good

but the cars handling is very nervous and steering ivn worst
i use stein setup for the steerwheel , is alot better (thx stein thumbs up)
concept(engine) from grid is the same like colin mcrea dirt
the only thing i bother me is the multiplayer ,no friendships,no nameservers,no championships
its a total different game like the other racedriver

grtz

Bummer that it wasn't any good.  Good jorb posting on ebay, hopefully you can recoup most of your investment and the chap that buys it won't increase the maker's profits.

well, my friend bought this game for PC, even though he doesn't have one, and we tried it with my DFP. I must say it looks amazing. but the game play is about as poor as it gets. plus the new patch crashes the game every time you exit. The steering is so disconnected is pretty much undriveable. I don't know how this made it past beta testing. no amount of adjustment could make it adaquit. After playing Race driver 1 and 2, plus the old Toca BTCC games, which i enjoyed, that the current crop of codemasters racing games are like the sirens in the Odyssey. They might look and sound apeeling  but it's really a trap.

Grinn.. dont think i've tried the patch yet..

Haven't touched it much.. was hoping there would be a following to setup a server for, but well... guess reviews like that dont do it any good either..

Ya gotta slam the car around the track instead of trying to "drive" it... it's intense steering that you need to do.. not the wussy 1 rotation per minute ya give for GTL for instance.. to keep the car straight.. hehehe   this IS an arcadegame.

i was noticing the steering to be very slow and laggy, almost impossible to guess what might happen next. it might be fun with a controller, but with a wheel, for me anyway, no joy. it's a shame, it does quite a bit well, but not where it really counts.

yes stieny, sure did. we were up and down on the sliders, all types of different combos, nothing felt right.
