Interest check for Winter 2008 NASJ GTL series
« on: December 04, 2007, 03:00:33 am »
Well guys, only 3 races remain of the current fall series. We have had some great fun, welcomed some great new members to our little group, and I for one would like to see the series continue on this side of the pond.  thumbs up

We will finish our current season on 12/22. I would like to run a season starting Jan 5th or thereabouts, and continue through March.
So what are your thoughts?

Do you have interest in participating in a winter season?
Do you want to keep the same night and time as present or is there a time/day that works better?
Do you like the every week schedule or prefer every other week?
Do you like the current race format or should we mix it up a bit with some additional pit rules or maybe go to a sprint race format, etc.?

Any suggestions or comments that will keep us racin' are welcome!  :hats off:
Steve

Sounds good, Steve! I would love to have another season.

I would like to keep with the same day and I think the race format could be changed slightly. I just don't know what yet. And I am fine with the every week format. :)

I'm all in for NASJ GTL, time slot is fine with me as is, as for what night? got 7 to pick from and all are OK with me, can we include a couple of long "Enduros" (I mean "ENDUROS")  anything less than 3 hours should not be considered endurance in my opinion. And what about an all classes run season? Three champions for three classes at seasons end. 30-45 minute Qually but drivers get only 2 laps + warm up lap, NO more fighting for pole, you either get it in 2 or you dont-period. would give everybody equal shot without worrying about screwing up someone's "HOT LAP". Everybody on Comms, NO CHAT MESSAGES during qually or race.

The current time works for me.  I would like to see it stay on Saturday, but if the day changes and the time stays the same I am good to go.  I don't know if I could make it for 3 hours would be interesting to try.  A 1.5 hour race would be very doable for me, would make pit strategies much more important.

If we get enough racers signed up a three class series would be nice.  I myself would choose to run in the TC-65 Class.

I can only race every other week, no matter what day it's on...But, you can expect me to try to make the ones when I'm not working.  :)

I kind of agree with what Kevin said about limited qually laps.  It might give some us slower guys a chance to get our laps in without some alien (who's only trying to cut a couple 10ths off an already blistering lap time) driving up our tailpipes (while we are on cold tires because we were virtually driven off the track in our first 3 attempts to qualify)   :nose:

some good suggestions there  just a few small bits to think about while thinking on them

long races are not always that easy to do online  there is a lot that can go wrong  such as incidents early on can mean by the time your getting to the 3 hour mark your left with 1 runner, servers are not always reliable on the long races  and the chances of disconnects rises big time

the limited numbers of laps qualifying ....... this can only be done with everybody agreeing to only run that number of laps in GTL there is no server option to limit the number like in other games, single lap qualifying was tried in the past and there is always somebody ends up doing more than the given number  so then you have to consider penalties for over limit laps which puts people off racing then you have everybody sat waiting for a clear spot so they don't get there laps stuffed up  unless you have somebody send each driver out to do there laps on a clear track  again people tend to get bored and stop racing

it is near impossible to get everybody on comms some don't have the equipment some simply won't use comms at all as they find it more distracting listening to idle chatter when they are trying to concentrating if you state MUST use comms then you may loose drivers again
also the no chat thing is near impossible to do again as your always getting people joining and saying hi as they join  unless of coarse you stop people joining during qualifying  again loss of drivers

thats the thing with SJ we are a casual racing group with very few MUST do rules  and the thing most like about it

the only way to have all these things working fully is to drop the casual and have hard rules and strict time keeping

this is just my experience over the time i've been at SJ so only a guide line it  is up to you guys if you want to try them or not maybe you can find a way to make things work every race  going off my comments  ;)

Thanks Ian, as with many ideas there may be pros and cons to both sides. Your experience and knowledge is respected very much to us that do not know or have not thought about all views.
I'm sure there is a solution for every problem that exists, finding the "Happy Medium for All" hopefully does not start a war. I'm very happy with just being a member, nothing has to change by needs, possibly not even by wants. For me "New Season" brings up thoughts of improvements or "What If's" thats all.

"New" wish list: 1. NASJ GTL League runs every 2 weeks, would give everybody plenty of practice time to bring their "A" game.
                      2. "Off" weekends will be NASJ "Fun Run" ( I cant stop thinking how much fun we had at the Goodwood revival runs ).
                      3. I still like idea of "All classes Run" format.
                      4. Would be cool to discuss possibilty of how to implement "Driver Swap" for GTL Enduros, dont know if possible?
                      5. Qualifying done by random?
I guess I better stop there for now, what are the possibilities? repercussions?  :?:

thanks for listening, Kevin.  :twit:

I'm open to another night and twice monthly since that would allow duc and Ray to be in.  How about Monday night?

I would like to see 2 sprint format.  I think that a lot of people don't/can't dedicate the time to practice, and the 2 race format always makes for a cracking second race.  Maybe with one long one to finish the season.   :hats off:  :hats off:  :hats off: thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up

Some great ideas guys. Keep 'em coming! Giz makes good points though. We can be a bit creative, but I would like to keep to the confines of what the game will allow.
I like the idea of 3 classes Kevin, but I think we need more than 10-11 drivers for it to be realistic. I would like to see at least 15 anyway.

One thing we could try is a defacto handicapping system where say we all drive any TC-65 of choice but the top 5 guys or so are limited to abarths or minis. I for one wouldn't mind at all. I think it might make for closer racing amongst us all. It could be a blast!

As far as length of race goes we could do a mix of sprint and long no problem.

Every other week is cool. Same season length, just half the races. As far as race night goes, I think Monday night would work fine as far as the server goes. I don't think there is another race on that night. It would get pretty late for a work night on the east coast though. What if we pushed the race back an hour? Could you west coast guys live with that?

I'll think about the qual system Ray. I thought having a one hour qual session might alleviate some of what you are talking about. But I know what you mean, and am as guilty as anyone of blasting through on hot laps. Maybe we just need a gentle reminder like yours now and again. Thank you! :hats off:

Well, let's give it another week or 2 to hash everything out before making a schedule.  :)

I would definitely be in for a winter NASJ GTL season.  The current time slot is perfect for me, but I would be open to changing the day.  Every other week would be fine with me as well.

I would like to see a mix of sprint and long race formats used.  I would prefer mostly long races with a few sprint events thrown in to keep things interesting.

I like multi-class races, but I agree that the single car or single class format is more practical here because of the size of the grid.  It would be nice however to add some events where there's the choice of 2 or 3 cars capable of similar lap times, like the SJC season had.  It's especially interesting when the cars in question are opposites in terms of straight line speed and cornering, i.e. Elan vs TVR or Alpine vs Ferrari.

I'de like to be there,For me the current day/time is correct, the other night i can be there are Friday and Sunday (i can in afternoon).I work week days on late evening shift 4x 10h, 3:30 pm to 2:00 am

Enduro more than 1:30 h is difficult, so many things could hapend.
maybe 2 round of 1:30h!?

I've had race before in a league where for qualyfing we did 1 lap warm up and 1 hotlaps, went on the track one by one while all
the others watching... exiting! next driver can start his warm up lap enough long after previous driver pass the line for his hotlap, just need to be discipline

Some great ideas, nice!

As for the race night - I like how it's currently set at Saturday night. I know I've only been able to join you for 5 of the 10 races so far, but it would be even less with a weeknight move.

Looking forward to the winter season!  thumbs up

I like the Saturday format, but any night but Sunday is good.  The 11 PM start is better for me (and I live on the east coast  :twit: ), but I could more than likely make a 10 PM start time.
