My first thoughts
« on: July 19, 2008, 10:22:29 pm »
http://www.vimeo.com/1371149I was on my second lap in iRacing. This was the first turn at Limerock. Having never driven this car or Sim I was trying to absorb every detail of the experience. Anyway I came into the turn very hot and ended up in the grass. As I was coming back around to the track, I tapped the throttle. My tap was a bit too much I guess and I sent the car across the track in the other direction. I jumped the curb, and had to appreciate the effects. The bounce caught me off guard. As you can see, the physics of the 'wreck' are damned good.

I look forward to more time and practice in this Sim. I only wish I had more free time, and TALENT.

Well I managed to get the game installed.  Get my wheel and TrackIR working well.  I've only done a total of ten laps though.  Just wanted to share my experience.  I don't think I'll do as well as Gary, but I'll try.

Installation

It was rather easy.  Fill in your personal info along with payment information.  Click send, and you are in.  There is a step by step guide for setting up your game, and hardware.  There is an installer for the base game.  Then you can choose how much of the base content you want to download.  I chose to download everything that comes standard.  I clicked the button to do so.  Moments later my PC froze completely.  Not sure if it was related to iRacing or not.

Getting some laps in

As I stated above.  I've only done around ten or twelve laps.  Long enough to configure my wheel, and mess with the video settings a bit.  I haven't had much free time the last couple of days.  My initial thoughts are 'Where did my frame rates go?'.  I'm getting around 30fps on about 75% quality.  It's a serious drop from other sims.  In rFactor and GTL I'm getting 100+ with everything maxed.  There's got to be something I'm missing in the settings, but I've yet to find it.  Parts of the terrain are tearing, but it still looks very good.  Tonight I'm going to go through the iRacing forum to see if I can find a solution.  Aesthetically the game is very nice, but it's not much better looking than what we currently have.

Now the physics!  Even with nearly no time on track I can say that the physics are awesome.   :can of worms:  The Solstice is very responsive.  Throwing the tail out is simple, and getting it back is as well.  I definitely need practice, but I can see this is going to be a great driver's game.  I'm super excited to spend a few hours tonight and tomorrow getting my wheels back beneath me.

There is a decent damage model.  If you slide off the track and tap the wall, your car WILL be messed up.  I didn't record the replay but I did rub the wall once.  I came away with a smashed headlight, busted fender, and a flat tire.  I love this aspect, although it guarantees many hours in the pits for me.

The website

Simple to navigate.  Simple to find what you need.   A nice 'friends' system for finding your friends.  It's actually a really great setup.  It's the perfect base for everything you could possibly want.  I haven't finished exploring yet, but so far it looks great.  I wish I had the know how to implement many of their features here at SJ.

Price

I wont spend much time on this one.  We all know it's pricey.  I installed the base game.  That's twenty dollars a month.  I also purchased the Radical and the Infineon track.  There's another forty out the door.  I don't mind paying for the extra content.  But the monthly subscription is going to bother me down the road.  I might spring for the yearly plan.  It just depends on how soon they'll implement league support.

If I had gotten 30FPS, I would have not continued as it seems like anything under 40 isnt smooth enough especially since other cars will bring that down.

Do you have all shadows turned off.  Thats a huge FPS killer for me.

The solstice will get more fun as you push it more as you can push it further than on other games and recover.  It seemed really slow when I first ran it because I was driving it how you would in other sims.  In fact my first impressions were iffy.

Good luck on the radical, 'beautifuly' modelled but a bear in the bumps.  Doubt I have done 1 LR lap yet.

Will put you on my friends list, My iRacing name is Gary Mahan.

It is rather surprising.  This system is rather decent.  Haven't played a game yet that I can't run stable on Max.

Will try that tonight.

Attached is my graphics setup.

Note, you have to quit the session and come back in for graphics changes to take effect.

This setup is showing 130FPS in the skippy in the pits at infineon.  Solstice will be a little less.

Shadows off dont bother me a bit and I am used to that in all the ISI sims, only enough shadows (low) so you dont see the car.track interface.

iRacing even with no shadow on has shadows under the cars.

Alright latest update.

Followed the advice of Dave and Gary.  Turned shadows off.  Turned VSync off and checked the 'unlimited' box.  Also adjusted my card's memory setting in game to 512.  For some reason the game was saying 300.  (My card is 8800 GT)

MUCH SMOOTHER!  Frames immediately jumped to 110 or better.  No more tearing of the scenery, and everything looks really nice.

Going to have some dinner, and then try to do 20 laps or so.  Then I'm going to try and race.

Also I have a nice crash to show you.  Uploading now.  lol

Good to here, initially it had my memory at 64MB :jawdrop:

You will like it at 110FPS as thats pretty good for the solstice.

Gonna go grab some beer and join, might see ya.

I decided I would qualify and then do a race.  It seems your qualify time stand for the duration of the week.  So if you get a good one, you can join in races without having to post a qualify time again... Until it expires at the end of the week.

I did 13 laps.  On the 13th I posted a 01:05.849 lap time.  It's not very good, but it's the best I've done so far.  Once the session ended I realized how tired I am.  I'm going to wait and have my first race in the morning.  The 1:05 puts me 29th out of 44 drivers who have qualified.  Since I have no experience in this car, I will call this lap time good.  I don't belong any further up the starting grid anyway.

So tonight I got in thirty or so laps.  I am really getting the feel of Limerock now.  This IS Limerock.  The track is awesome!  I have a video that I need to figure out how to compress and upload.  In this video you can see the suspension work around every bump, and sink in this track.  You can see the car come loose, and grab again.  It's fantastic!

Flat out this is the closest thing I've ever felt to driving a real car.  It reminds me of the track days I used to get to do when I worked for an auto dealer.  The car feels like you'd expect it to feel.  When you get going around the track, you remember where the little bumps are.  You know where to go, and not to go.  Don't touch the curb coming out of Diving Turn (7) at Limerock unless you want to go for a spin.  It's amazing, and I've never had a track feel so alive.  It's like the road surface is always communicating with the wheel.

On a sad note, my rating hasn't increased one bit.  Somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 laps done with no change.  I did have a few offs in there, so maybe that put me back.

The game is still running great.  No lag, no flashing cars, no real issues to speak of.  Just fun.  :gtg:

I can't wait to race tomorrow.

EDIT:

Well I got in bed, and this didn't feel right.  lol

I want to crack the top 25.  Number 25 is at 01:05.528.  Drivers qualified 20-25 are all in the 1:05 range.  I broke the high 1:05 with little practice.  Think I'll do another 20 tomorrow and see if I can't get in that top half of the field.

One thing I have noticed about the shadows is if you turn off 2 pass and more shadows you will get the huge boost in fps.  I keep shadows checked and notice no difference in fps.

BTW, got VIR and Infineon.  VIR=lots of practice. I can only get 3:10's so far.  Like 10 secs off pace:( Infineon seems to suit me better. I run a regular 1:29. Not great but for mee its ok. I am only running the skippy now until I get some funds for the prototype thats comming.  BTW names Bruce Morse. Added you guys to friends.  See ya

Just completed my first race.  20 Laps at Limerock.   thumbs up

Hands sweaty?  check

Elevated heart rate? check

Big smile on face?  check

I qualified fourth.  During the warmup laps I decided to make a clean race my goal.  I wanted to see how much I could boost my rating in one race.

Green light, and the race was on.  I had a slow start but managed to keep my position for a couple laps.  I had a driver who was making me nervous so I let him pass.  Back to fifth I went.  However that driver lost it within a couple turns.  Back up to fourth I go.  Before I could exhale I had another nutter breathing down my neck, so I let him by.  Got passed a couple more times, and ended up finishing sixth.  A middle packer like always.

It was great fun.  Managed to boost my rating to 2.67 from 2.50.  Might do another race shortly.  That is if I can get my heart to slow down lol

Note:  Not sure what stats I was looking at last night.  But my qualifying time on the series stats has me all the way down at 96th based on what I'm looking at today.  Guess I better think about improving that!

Just completed my second race of the day.  :gtg:

Another 20 at Limerock.  Qualified third.  Ran a clean first few laps and then slid off at "Big Bend".  Fell back to sixth.  Got back on the track and finished the rest with no events.  Wound up in fourth, and another twelve tenths on my rating.  Now at 2.79.

Think I'll do the 0100 GMT race tonight if my wife doesn't come home before then.  I'm having a blast!

Sounds like your having a blast, just tryu to focus on the SR rating and doing a few TT's and you should be good for a class d license by the end of the month.  You will have to get to 3.0 in the legends as well but that is pretty easy.  TT's only take a few minutes and races are alot of fun.  Just be careful, you have to be quick in recoveries in the legends.

For the legends:  Hands tired after race 'check', you will see what I mean

Hope to see you at the 01:00 GMT race dont know if we will be in same race, I just did a qualy in the mid 1:05, had quite a few cars on the track and it was fun.

Alright I've got my first gripe.  And yes I'm only mad because I blew the race.  lol

Race 3 of my iRacing career.  I qualified pole.  I was so happy.  I thought 'man these guys must be really new'.  You know, if I qualified above them.  Well I was wrong.  Two of them are nearing a 5.0 rating.  Meaning they have lots more experience than me.  Not only that, but they haven't qualified.  So they get put near the back.  Before long these guys were on my arse.  No biggie though, I can maintain.  But one was closing in.  So I get smart and decide to push myself harder.  That turned into another first corner off... and a slide through Ted's on my way to the barrier.

Now I'm not used to leading.  I am new to this game, and I need loads more practice.  But I want to share what I learned tonight.  Qualifying is pointless if everyone isn't doing it.  You have the inexperienced Marcus leading the charge for six laps.  Only to lose it trying to defend position against guys way more experienced.

Next week I don't think I'll qualify.  No point in starting up front because I can't hold it yet.  :(  I was the lowest rated driver in the race.  With the exception of a 1.64 driver named Troy Radford who looked to be just messing around.  So the bright side is that my rating didn't suffer as a result of my noobish ways.  (Still 2.79)

I'm going to go sulk for a bit.  Then maybe come back for the 0300 GMT race.

Been thinking on this.  The SR Rating isn't an indicator of skill.  It's just a safety rating.  The more time you spend on track without fecking up, the higher it goes.  The fact I crashed had nothing to do with a difference in talent.  I just flat out screwed the pooch.

Am going to go back for another round.  :knockout:

Maybe that first turn wont see me sneak in.

That is my only complaint also.  I sat 2nd last night with a 1.29 and was pretty much run over by peeps running 1.25 at Infineon that didn't qualify.  Needless to say I was knocked off the track and ruined my race.  I thought the same thing Marcus but the more I think about it the bigger the service gets the more imperitave it will be to qualify to get matched correctly.  They really need to force people to qualify to eliminate this problem though.
Tonights race I ran in at 9:00 seemed to be evenly matched and was a really good race.

Yeah, skill is moreso your iRating which I dont think applies to rookies.  You can get good SR just by putzing around and I would recommend that until you get your SR for both road and oval above 3.0.  Well dont putz around too much, just dont go all out.

If you have that by the end of the month, you should get a class D license.

Hehe, never occured to do that, get on vent that.

So the race was on, and I have P2 so nobody in front and thought I would get a good start, better than normal but marcus gets the holeshot but overcooks it in T2 and we all wave goodbye :)

Actually a great race for me, had P3 for most of the race and got passed about 2/3 in.  The P3 guys spins about 4 laps later and I just tried to keep my cool and finish.

Like marcus says, this is the closest thing to real racing/track days I have ever experienced thumbs up, this sim/game is digital crack!

Need to cool down.

  Agreed!

Well Gary said it.  I cooked it in turn two.  Tried talking on vent, watching the guy in front of me, and the guy behind me at the same time.  I'm not good at multitasking.  So I went through the grass.  Let everyone around, then got my car back on track.  Pushed at a medium pace until she waved the checkered flag.

Nice job taking that Podium Gary.   :hats off:

I do agree with the qualy thing but your SR rating and iRating are affected by the strength of field.  Dont put so much into winning and just enjoy the experience, learn lines from the fast guys and be glad you are not running with the real rookies.

I approach it like a track days, just go out and have fun, do your best but have fun.  I learn some of me best lessons following others and figure out my own lines/combos from that.  I cant even stand offline racing now and thats a shame as GTL being more euro centric doesnt have anyone racing online at these times usually.

As a track instructor once said.  If someone comes up on you, he IS faster.  You will learn nothing by staying in front and everything by following him.

I can see why guys are doing this, fast guys not qualifying...they are probably boared and just want to win.  For now, I want to learn from those guys.
