iracingcentral.com
« on: August 13, 2008, 01:41:01 am »
I was debating on whether or not to launch a site using this url.  Had it for ages, and went back and forth on my feelings.  I did seek permission to use it, but have yet to get an answer in either direction.

Anyway after talking with Jett I have decided to move forward with it.  Just barely got it set up, and it's not nearly as fun to look at as this site, but it's there.  Should the folks at iRacing throw a fit, it's very easy to move a forum to a new url.

Feel free to register and discuss the game there if you like.

meh, wanted to be the 2nd member, only managed 3rd... lol

/anyway, I'm not against iracing atm, I just haven't signed up yet.  I'm going to give it a while to mature  :innocent: as I've got plenty of other racing on the plate right now and the cost seems high.

edit: now there's seven!  Great job Marcus, if they keep coming in like this you'll be in the green!

Nah, the goal is non-profit.  Otherwise it would be unethical.  But maybe donations later on to help fund the server.

Gotta suss out a theme, and permissions on the boards still.  But figured it would probably be better to have it's own site since it's a totally different animal than anything else out there.  Should help to keep the contention off the site too since it's a dedicated sort of thing.

Ya I'm a bit nervous about that one.  Should they order the cease and desist I will comply, and move to a less exclusive URL.  Hopefully they take it as flattering rather than intrusive though. :fingers crossed:

Yeah. I hear ya, I think it is OK specially if it is non-profit.

But I'm nervous too, because iRacing is kind of exclusive when it comes to their stuff,  rFactor is waaaay open to that and other stuff.

Either way I'll support your effort, I agree the site is a great idea.

meh, there's a first amendment thingy in the US I think still.  If you're using the site for a legitimate purpose I'm pretty sure you're ok.  If you register www.parishiltonsvideos.tvxxyyy and don't put something legitimate on it, then you're in trouble...

edit: but if you have a legitimate site that relates to the url, I'd say you're ok.  but I'm not a lawyer.  I'm sure we could take up a collection and there's probably a few ACLU members that are also on site...

Hopefully we'll be ok.  Going by what I've read about 'internet squatting laws' I have a few key things to do.

1.  Maintain a non profit status.

2.  Make our 'unofficial status' VERY obvious.

3.  Make sure that our existence does not have a negative influence on their flow of income.

I have no interest in violating any of those rules.  But like I said.  I'll move it if I have to.  :gtg:

hmmm, good to know about "having a negative influence".  I'd like to do a bit more research on that if I was a lawyer or solicitor with a paying client.  I'm pretty sure I could say something that might "have a negative influence" on a corporation in the US and be within my 1st amendments rights.

/what do y'all n'all think?

The way I understood it is like this.

Say I started some kind of game, charged for it, and put it on that site.  That would be stealing in essence.  I no longer have the pages bookmarked, and I'm not a lawyer, but I tried to interpret it as best I could.

Another example would be selling a soda beverage on CokaKola.com.  If that makes sense.

Here's hopping the only amendment needed in all this iRacing thing will be the one for your race car's bumper after trying to break the sound barrier in your Solstice :)

Let's give the site a breath, see what happens.

I'm still trying to decide on a theme.  If I keep that one, I will definitely do something about the quotes.  I have found a couple other themes that I really like.  I'm just trying to decide how simple I want the thing.

Edit:  Found a nice plain silver theme.  Would just have to change the orange colors to Red.  Hmmmm will leave it for tonight.  Gotta get some sleep now.

Now go make some posts folks so it doesn't seem so empty lol

Wow, I did a GIS on CokaKola and found absolutely nothing related the Coca-Cola.  Methinks they've got some good-outstanding lawyers (solicitors in EU?).

Just wanted to advertise, Marcus Lindsey has uploaded helluva lot of setups for every car, surely a valuable resource.
