People may judge it as they want these days but I suspect back when this happened drinking and driving was quite normal behaviour. Then again, from the numbers of accidents even now, it still is.
Hell, I remember my Dad having us hold his beer when he'd drive the 20 miles on the highway to his cabin as he'd have it in a glass he took from the last bar he'd left....
