Tiscali Port Blocking
« on: July 15, 2009, 12:54:07 pm »
Anyone else having problems like these. :grr:

I know Tiscali throttle P2P etc during prime time usage, but now they seem to be blocking access to steam at the same time.

At the moment my steam account will access no problem all day, then 17:30 till 23:30 no access at all (offline only) then all OK again. Internet access during these times seems unaffected.

Not sure if this caused my kicking from GTR evo race on Sunday as I was having to run steam offline, guess I'll find out this Sunday. Takes the edge off looking forward to the race somewhat.

Raised a ticket with them, but the last time I had problems took 8 months to sort out.

Any advice on good UK ISPs as may be requesting MAC code if no solution forthcoming pronto.

well first step id take is track down the head of complaints for tiscali and tell hi/her your problem.
they should be able to address that, as gaming is why you buy their bandwidth.
if you have access to cable(virgin media) i can recommend them, though they do need a good kick up the behind every few months. just to remind them that we can monitor them as much as they can us. if im not getting what i paid for i want and have received compensation.

I was curious about what ISP's offer in the UK to their customers and it seems te be cheaper than in Belgium, which is not really a surprise.
At first sight Virgin looks dirt cheap, until you start to read the small letters lol. Anyway, my pick would be Virgin Broadband XL combined with phone and TV if I would be a UK resident :-)

Had alot of problems with tiscali a few years back at peak times, they never managed to sort it. After six months of getting nowhere I ditch them and went to Freeola.

Not the cheapest but very reliable.

Broadband Max upto 8 meg via BT.

XL is 20meg that suits me fine
for another £15 a month i could get 50meg, but i hear its still quite buggy so i will wait a while for that.

Yeah, I was indeed wondering a bit about that 50Mbps. I think it's the limit for EuroDOCSIS2, honestly I don't think any provider offers that speed on such a network. Most cable companies are upgrading to EuroDOCSIS3 (some already have) and that would allow speeds up to 200Mbps (theoretically) so than that 50Mbps would be no problem. However if they have upgraded to EuroDOCSIS3 than they would probably offer a 100 or 120Mbps plan imo.
