Satains computer plan
« on: March 23, 2009, 04:47:43 am »
Hey guys, i know im probably pretty much a stranger to most people here but im still around! Hopefully by this time next week i should have a new rig on the way. This is what i have planned so far but hopefully you guys can help me out with a few things? I can't go over my price max of about $2400 NZD, (excluding the screen) Some of us are poor uni students you know!

Case = http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=362867

MB = http://www.ascent.co.nz//ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=374383

Edit* Changed mobo so it had 2 pci-16 for the card.

CPU = http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=361865

Also do you think quad core 2.5ghz is a better choice? I am willing to upgrade that if it is worth it.

Hard Drive = http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=360606

Already got another 250gb hard drive so not too worried bout space.

DVD = http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=373341

RAM = http://www.ascent.co.nz//ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=374018

Edit* Changed ram to ddr3 had a bit of a google and seemed to be quite a bit better in some cases and plus my mobo only supports ddr3 lol

Graphics = http://www.ascent.co.nz//ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=373182

Edit* Changed graphics card model to a Galaxy and saved myself $140... i'm probably not necessarily getting it from this site, more of just a look around until i finalise it. The way i see it GFX cards is the main part of the comp, to me anyway, i can upgrade the rest at a later date but want a card that'll last me for a long time.

Monitor = http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=371605

PSU = http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpec.aspx?itemID=370041

Thanks in advance for your help guys, i might be on the track some time soon i hope!

I'm not an expert, but from what I can gather a 285 isnt much faster than a gtx 280, but the prices of a gtx 280 is a fair bit cheaper. With the money saved on the card I would get faster ram (DDR3). And if you are going to use it primarily for gaming a core duo is fine, no need for quad core as most games dont utilise the extra cores. Also hunt about a bit, I reakon you could get a better priced 22' monitor for those bucks. But I am not sure of how things are priced in NZ.

Check with an expert about the comparison of a 280 to a 285 and the ram though, just to be sure.

I would have to agree with Mike - a $900 odd vid card would be a bit of overkill - but your call.....

Have a look at this site:-

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php

I know its in Aus, but a 285 is about $300 cheaper than what you posted. Its a good place to compare your considerations to and even with exchance rate and freight it may well work out cheaper, or allow you buy better parts for the same dollers. They use air freight and its pretty quick and have a freight calculator as well (not sure if it includes NZ but an e-mail to them will find out)
Due your due dilligence with your budget, I found that by using these guys I saved about $1500 on what I was origionly quoted for an i7 set up.

Also are you considering SLI later on, if you are a better power supply would be advisable now, rather than getting another one later
Hope it helps.

Hey Stain  Good to see ya posting again :)

I get al my stuff from Paradigm Puters In welly [url]http://www.pp.co.nz//url]All there prices include Freight. I learned the hard way that some of the cheaper stores charge a bloody fortune to ship stuff.

 You can always have a geez around price spy at prices too[url]http://www.pricespy.co.nz//url]
 I got an E8400 a few months back & run it with 2 gig of ram & A gt8800 . Runs everything I've thrown at it with out any dramas .Even GTA4 runs 1280 x1024 60 FPS ish.

 Car sims are great for trying out "new Rig's" So ya'll have to get yer ass back in the saddle & do a few laps with yer old hommies  chocks away

Thanks for the help guys, ive been in contact with a family friend who's a computer whoesaler and said he could hook me up with a good deal, so im waiting to hear back on Tuesday from him. And i think SLI can wait for another 100 years when i finish my degree and get some money in the bank lol.

Oh and don't worry Steiny its bound to happen again! Hopefully the new machine will mean more than 15fps i use to get and get me back into the mood for some serious racing.

And that site you linked me to cole is quite a bit cheaper from what i can see. And thanks for the advice Mike.  chocks away

I have the Antec P182.  But I cannot believe how much money that site wants for it!  Surely there's got to be a a better deal out there.

Anyway if you want a quiet, clean, and simply bad ass case I recommend it highly.  I will take pictures of the wiring job jKramer did for me on it.  It's superb.

Note:  Just found the Antec P182 on newegg for 129.00.  Shit I can't believe how much you pay for this case down there.

Yeah Marcus, we get flogged down here on prices, and then you have to convert our doller (which resembles a 4 day old party balloon ATM thanks to Uncle George's fiscal stupidity). On top of that our population is only the size of NY city so consumption and consumer demand is considerably less, which also adds to the price.

i hate double posting but thought i'd keep you informed. Im still waiting on 2 more parts arriving on monday (i hope anyways) for my new (and first fully purchased myself-ish) computer!

i decided going with:

- Gigabyte Nvidia GTX285 - was less than $800NZD so thought it wasnt too bad, and got farcry2 free! lol
- Asus p5 something arather pro motherboard
- E8400 Cpu
- 4gb of Corsair ddr2 1066 ram
- 750W HX? Corsair psu
- 22" LG monitor
- 640gb western digital hdd
- some crappy dvd writer
- oh and the very ugly case i showed earlier :(

all for roughly $2500NZD which isnt that bad i dont think.

expect to see alot more of you now that ive finally got a machine to race on!
 :excited:
