Running an EVGA 750i Sli FTW Motherboard. I think a 700 Watt power supply.

My EVGA 8800GT seems to be giving up the ghost already. If I were to upgrade, which NVIDIA card would your advise me to buy, and why?

Yes I'm completely oblivious to what is good. The technology and pricing changes so fast that I don't want to go off an older thread in the forum for advice.

I tried the ATI 4870x2 when I built myself a new PC but had so many problems and BSOD's I sent it back and replaced it with a GeForce GTX285 and I works perfect. I'm running GTRevo, rFactor, GTR2 and GTL with all the settings at max without any problems in performance.

It would help if you would give a bit of price range. Power/price ratio should be pretty damned good with these Radeons: (gonna upgrade myself to 4890 soonish)

Radeon HD 4870 1 Gt 160€
Radeon HD 4890 1 Gt 220€

As for the problems.. Individual experiences always differ loads with both cards.. some swear to Nvidia.. some to ATI.. Ive had plenty of both (i like power/price ratio), and simply at this time the Radeons seem much more sensible option. (surprisingly my gfx card life has been very trouble free with both)

I have an Nvidia 8800 GT, and if it were to die on me, I'd replace it with a Radeon 4850. It's a tiny bit faster, and it's very well priced. I like good power/price ratio too.

I'm a complete noob, but just to offer a different experience to Krister:
My new system includes a NV 9800GT card, and I have been plagued by random game freezes with GTRE and GTL over the past few months.
I have tried almost every piece of advice available on the internet but no permanent solution yet. I'm currently having my hardware checked by my supplier (still under warranty) but I'm seriously considering changing the video card to an ATI one, based on experiences of others.

Yes I get lots of freezes/graphical errors with my card in COD5, and a couple other odd times... followed by messages about the video hardware not responding, or drivers failing. Multiple installs later the problem persists.

I don't know that an ATI card is going to run well in my nvidia 750i MB.

Yup. should not provide any issues.
I however prefer nVidia based cards, but that matter is split like some Portly ass between every member in here.

Well do give me the lowdown on nvidia cards as well as ATI if you think the machine will run it. Using an intel processor btw.

Budget is between two and three hundred US. Depending on how soon I have to make the jump.

Radeon 4870 & 4890, Geforce GTX260 or GTX280..
Depending how much you wanna spend.. Any of those cards is damned fast and a good option.
Good cheap option is also Radeon 4850 which i have atm, a neat little card.
(running GTR Evo maxed @ 1920x1080)
You can easily google for some reviews and tests, and prices.. and see for yourself what you wanna get.

Went from 2x 8800GTs in SLI to a Radeon 4870X2....

Can't wait to go bak to Nvidia!

Radeon drivers are always in beta it seems, and Nvidia cards let you use more (better) anti aliasing in most (all) games, then there is the physics thing with nvidia cards as well...

I would go for a Geforce 295 if I was you m8..... but only if you have won the lottery

Have you updated your motherboard drivers? ... Costs nothing and might offer you some relief

All drivers are up to date. And have flashed the bios with the most recent version.

I wish I didn't need to get a new card, but I really think this one is buggered.

Yeah the issue could also be the motherboard; I don't fully trust nVidia chipset based motherboards as I've had some bad experiences.

Like Jarkko I've used AMD/ATI and nVidia cards in the past, but currently I would advice the 48xx series (not the X2 though!). Damned good cards for their price class.

Just to throw another into the mix, if you are considering ATI HD48xx take a good look at the HD4770, just got one, best value for money at the mo, got mine for £75 very close to HD4850 (better in some benchies) but 30-40 quid cheaper.

If you have problems with ATI versus nVidia it's often in connection with the MB. Some MB's works better with ATI and others with nVidia. Before building this new PC I had the ATI X1950 and never had any problems. With the new PC (another type of motherboard) I could not get the ATI 4870x2 to work. Could be a combination of a dual GPU card and ATI. Once I did put in the GTX285 it just runs without any problems. So pick what you feel is best and be sure to have the right to have it replaced if you end up with problems.

I'd send the one you have back for a replacement. It should have anwhere from a 1 year to a lifetime warranty.

I'd also not pronouce a card as dying because of the way one game performs on it.

Hey JK. I wasn't sure if you were still posting.

Since we have nearly twin rigs would it be possible to meet up with you and do some problem solving? I could call, or do it on vent/skype.

I only pronounced it dead based on what I was reading in some nvidia forums. I don't want to spend any money, so I'd be happy to try and get it replaced. I just don't know where the box is.

You don't need the box it came in. All you need is proof of purchase at an approved vendor, which newegg is.

Look on the evga site for support/RAM everything you need should be there. I sent em my mobo once when the onboard sound chip died, they fixed it free and fast.
