Linux inside VirtualBox
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:40:47 pm »
I'd like to start tinkering with Linux inside a virtual machine.
I know pretty well nothing of the Linux world, so my question is, as I really just want to start learning the unix command line stuff, which distro would be good for me to start with?
From Googling, "Damn Small Linux" seems appropriate, but I'd appreciate some advice from those more knowledgeable before I decide.

Cheers

It comes down to personal preference. I like Ubuntu myself, so their 9.04 Desktop Edition is a good starting point imo. Damn Small Linux is rather a 'niche' distro.

I was thinking of Ubuntu as it seems very popular but wondered if it was a bit 'feature rich' for just learning about mounting volumes, user accounts etc.
On the whole, I think you are right, may as well go the whole hog.

Advice appreciated Kris... Ubuntu incoming :)

Yeah, I would just get a full featured distro. You can still determine how hardcore you go afterwards (full command line or mixed with GUI) Also you can switch very easily to another distro, when using virtual machines.

Well I'm posting this from Ubuntu inside Virtualbox and it certainly was a pain free installation. Still need to figure out the screen real estate, but other than that.. tip top :) .. what a lovely OS
