Internet browsers - some benchmarks
« on: August 26, 2009, 03:13:02 pm »
The following tests gives you a general idea of the speed of the different browers there are today for Windows (XP/Vista/7) on an average pc.

Specs pc:
AMD Athlon X2 3800+ (S939)
MSI K8N SLI Platinum
1 Gb DDR2 (OCZ Gold)
NVIDIA 7900GT
Western Digital Raptor 74Gb
Microsoft Windows XP MCE SP3

- Futuremark Peacekeeper

Safari: 2185
Chrome: 1602
Opera: 1246
FireFox: 1188
Internet Explorer: 464

- Google V8 Benchmark Suite

Chrome: 1777
Safari: 1398
FireFox: 245
Opera: 133
Internet Explorer: 42.6

Note: Internet Explorer throws a warning during the test.

- SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark

Chrome: 980.6 ms
Safari: 1213.4 ms
FireFox: 1953.0 ms
Opera: 6404.4 ms
Internet Explorer: 8844.8 ms

Note: Lower is better in this benchmark

I'll try to update this when new major updates get released of one of the browsers.

Current benchmarked versions:
Google Chrome 2.0.172.43
Apple Safari 4.0.3
Mozilla Firefox 3.5.2
Opera 10.00
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

Really?  Can't say I'd noticed!

 lol

Interesting findings there Kris.  I suppose I ought to give Chrome another look - not least for checking compatibility and layout issue.

I don't consider Chrome as 'complete' yet as there are a few compatibity issues, however I haven't noticed much layout issues. It's even better than IE8 in regard to layout issues lol

Very interesting reading Kris. As you point out, speed is a major factor, another is the complete browsing experience. For me Adblock plus, FireFTP and some other plugins give some extra points to FireFox in my personal browser use and mitigate the speed loss quite a bit.

Well yes Pete, but those other factors are difficult to measure of course. I used FireFTP but switched to a more 'complete' tool namely FileZilla. Adblock plus is indeed a nice plugin, but by default FireFox or Chrome have a popup blocker and that's in 99% of the cases enough for me. That's personal preference of course.

I'm a bit surprised by the Safari speed results, but I don't like their interface so much and Chrome still is the overall speed king. There are some compatibility issues however (examples: downloads from altbierbude.de doesn't function, beta downloads from Microsoft also don't work, vertalen.nu is slightly misdisplayed, ...) However the list of 'issues' is getting shorter without a loss of speed  :)

Filezilla is excellent.. :)
I simply prefer Firefox.. is fast enuff.. everything works.. plenty plugins and i like the functionality.
Google chrome was nice and smooth but.. somehow i just feel more at home with Firefox.

I used opera for a long time untill i finally switched to chrome. I am very happy with it now since it has extensions and such (in the beta version). I never liked the feel of firefox. I think overall, browser choice comes down to personal preference. Maybe chrome did better on alot of those benchmarks, but firefox was not bad. I use chrome not because it tops benchmarks, but because it feels right to me.

Interesting comparo's. I've used firefox forever, but will have to give chrome a whirl someday. I use thunderbird for email which I know I could use gmail, but also I use filezilla extensively for work files. It would be hard to give up such an excellent app. Maybe google will come out with ftp app that competes?

Hehe - I think Firezilla may be that rare thing - something which Junkies are in 100% agreement on!

I've added Opera results. Not really a speedy brower, only a bit faster then IE8.

Last night I was having fits with the forum. It showed me logged in, but I wasn't or couldn't or I don't know what. Seemed to have something to do with the community login/usage whatever. :grr: Anyway, firefox has been a problem on my xp rig since the 3.0 vers got released. Many cookie and login problems for me here, at you tube, hulu, etc.

Anyway, on a whim, I dl chrome. I gotta say, I am very impressed with the speed. The difference is very noticeable. The highlight is that it seems to have solved my login problem toot sweet.  yay!
I'm using it now, and may not go back to the fox. Thanks for the tips Kristof.   :hats off:

Today Opera 10.00 was released, so I updated the first post.

Comparison between Opera 9.64 and 10.00:

1st test: 798 --> 1246 (56% faster)
2nd test: 125 --> 133 (6% faster)
3th test: 7435.6ms --> 6404.4ms (14% faster)

So all in all a nice improvement, but overal still only faster than IE8
