GTR2 keeps shutting down.
« on: September 18, 2008, 12:31:43 am »
Weird. Maybe just a coincedence as it only started when I did some major changes to my PC. Made me think it was the XP acting evil.

Uninstralled and reinstalled GTR2. Same thing. I start the game, go on track and get a error report. Game dies. Same on Dedicated server. I put one up and sometimes it lasts less than 30 seconds!

Wiped the hard drive. Reinstalled again and...

same thing.

All I've added now is the wsgt mod/install as I thought it was related. Same thing.

I then did a wee bit of research and found out about trace logs.

Anyone know how to read one?

 Mine cames up as such:

(This is before I added my plr into the new install)

run the graphics setup in your GTR2 folder, make sure a resolution is listed.

My first thought was "I did that" as I had dropped it to 600 x 800 thinking that I had it too high....

But I just looked and realized I had set it at 16 bit!! I didn't even NOTICE that before! So just changed it to 32 bit and will try it. Think the "bit thing" would do it?

 Thanks man!!

Worked better but still did it.

The thing seems to be this one: (?)

"setup.cpp    1194: Could not find .HDC"

Saw something on RSC referring to possibility of unseated RAM or GPU and since I just replaced all the above, I'll crack it open and make sure everything is still seated properly before proceeding.

Nope. Tried also turning Direct X down to 8 but it's getting worse. Also now getting the error and it's hanging there and won't shut down.

Have you tried running it in window mode?
I used to get CTD's running it full screen, change to window mode and all is fine :salute:

I'll try anything at this point. Put the old card in and for a moment thought I had it though on D7. Then it crashed again. Dayamn!!

This line is the issue.  The .car file for this Ferrari is looking for the wrong .cas file.

At least as far as I know...

 Well..

I believe we're heading in the right direction.

I set it in windowed mode in the config but then the whole PC crashed!! Basically did a restart on it's own.

So, when I started the game back up again, changed it to Letterbox also in the game menu.

 So......

Just put 9 laps worth in the M3 and ran it out of gas!! YAAAY!!!

Tired now. So tomorrow will put the new GPU back in and try to baseline it from there. My one concern too is I wasn't online this last time and was the rest so will try a run with that variable in place also before making more changes.

I'm just going to fart with it tomorrow long enough to get it running if this IS the key because I want to get GTL back in and PLAY!!!! Haha.

Okay--Put my screen resolutions back up and tried again. Still seems to be okay. Gonna leave it for now, tired. Been at this ALL day and it's 12:30 am so I'm gonna take a break from this until tomorrow.

I wonder if its about the gfx drivers. What card and what driver version you are using?

This card now (the old one) is a GeForce 5200. The driver I loaded right from Nvidia's site,

The other card is a GeForce 6200 and I used the disk that came with it as earlier I TRIED to open the (downloaded) driver from Nvidia and XP told me it was "corrupted" and wouldn't install it.

I have a suspicion though that both cards use the same driver as when I downloaded the driver for the 6200 yesterday it said I already had the same file (asked to overwrite as I keep the unopened files in the same folder..)

I'm seriously tempted to leave the driver in that's here now when I swap back in the newer card. See what happens. At worse I delete it and install the newer(?) software.

At least the extra RAM works real well!! Haha. Maybe by Xmas I can get a seriouser card but for now, this is all I got to work with.

Ah, you didnt properly remove the old driver when installing new, possibly the cause of your problems.

You need to remove the old drivers from the control panel, then restart windows.. then install the new drivers and reboot again.

I would recommend driver cleaner, but its pay software nowadays.

I did remove the old drivers. After I removed them, XP wouldn't let me download the new one so I used the disk. Then tried to update after removing THAT software but after downloading XP wouldn't let me open what I downloaded as they said it was a corrupt file. Tried it a second time and got the same.

One thing I WILL say is you were right about starting this thread. I'm used to forums (auto etc) where if you ask a question like this you are jumped on for wasting the forum's time and space. And I didn't want to piss anyone off. You guys are great.

One thing I have definitely learned is the DIRECTION to search for the problem in. As I am also learning a new O.S. on top of everything else, I now know the "error report" is a generic message and THAT has helped a lot!! I had worked with '98 so long I knew it's quirks inside and out so this is a new experience all around.

I've put the new card back in as it was a HUGE improvement, until it crashed! HAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!

I'm going to redownload the driver into a separate folder and then compare them and see if they are indeed the same driver software. Once I know that I will proceed.

Still having my morning coffee and waking up so going to do the software as I have my coffee. Once I get this up and even if I have to use Windowed mode, I will leave it and re-install GTL.

Thanks again for all the help. I feel now that I'm getting somewhere. You guys have made my day and gotten my stress level waaaay down.

So it IS the same driver for both! Would have saved a lot of trouble. LOL. Got this:

"Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time."

Okay. So one of the messages I was getting and just got again is "Logitech Wingman Monitor has encountered a problem"

WTF??? I don't even know what that IS!

Aha!
Its the profiler causing problems then.. best to get rid of it.
You should see a red logo on the bottom right corner of windows, when you double click it, it will open the profiler. I NEVER use it, its begging for trouble.
Just open it, find where to close it down and close it.

Ill teach you later when we are on comms how to completely disable it so it wont start with windows.

Hey Dent, I have quite a bit of experience with the same card: FX5200/FX5500. I feel your pain. Performance wasn't great but has proven extremely durable, I could get best results on DX7 with details on low to medium, shadows need to be OFF, beware that some mods / tracks / skins are done in HI-resolution which will cause the FX5200 to really stutter(extremely low fps) compared to normal cars. Did not have problems with game crash though, I totally agree with Jarkko in disabling profilier and removing all old drivers and files from Nvidia-reboot-let windows install recomended adapter-reboot-then install latest Nvidia drivers(174.## I think) then use Nvidia control panel to adjust card settings to performance, maybe we get on vent to sort out? I'll look for my old driver files.

Kevin.

So, I just got back. Uninstalled Nvidia, did a restart, reinstalled, restarted again.

 I have a question.

When you have a set up from Nvidia such as this does do you also still set up in windows display properties? I have been setting resolution etc in Windows and then doing the set up through Nvidia. Does the windows properties have any effect on any of this? Or am I wasting my time or worse affecting this in a negative way with it?

I got the 6200 back in now anyways. Gonna look for that profiler thingie!

Disabled Profiler. Didn't use it anyways. Stupid thing!

Shadows are already off but glad to know to check.

Took it out of letterbox. Tried it. Worked.

Ramped it up to DX9, 2 laps and BLAMMO!! Back to restart sh**. PC crashed. Ooops!

Okay, no problem. We (sort of) know what we're (sort of) doing now so...

Internet back on, (Gotta keep baseline) and back into letterbox but still DX9.......and.....

Oh wow!! Just ran 9 laps and ran outa gas again! MWAHAHAHAAA!!

 Success!!

Now, gotta reinstall GTL for Alfatina and once all is well will see what happens with multiple cars but leaving settings there for now and doing that test later. YAAAAAY!!

I would recommend driver cleaner, but its pay software nowadays.

Anyways, MUCH better but still quirky. I figured out how to do a scandisk on XP and spent a few hours last night. Uninstalled the driver again, did a scandisk, defrag, re-installed did it again and bit better but now GTL is acting up!!!!

I can play and even lowered graphics are MUCH better but when exiting game it crashes with error code. WEIRD.

I'm really wondering since when I reload the driver if there are bits of the old driver(s) doing bad things as it always asks me to overwrite certain files. I'm going to see if I can find a free cleaner as I think this may be the problem. There is technically NO reason this card shouldn't work.

Right now I'm just going to make sure GTL will stay running enough for me to run Alfatina tonight. Not going to tear too much apart until later as I want to start up GTR2 and see if it's still where it was. Then I know we're getting somewhere.

Then I will see if I can find any left over Nvidia files and remove them and see if that helps.

Lucky for me, I'm not only methodical but as the wife says Obsessive........Haha.

Always, one misses ONE detail eh?? So I uninstalled the driver. Got a cleaner. Cleaned it up.

Did a Scandisk, did a defrag.

Let Windows install a driver and it installed the GeForce 6200 driver. Not a bad thing but where I let the details screw up. Mainly as I'm not sure WHERE it found the software! I was off line and hoping the cleaner cleaned OUT all the Nvidia software. Now I DID have the disc in the drive so it may have gotten it from there but don't know. See what I mean about details??? LOL.

Anyways. Going to give it a whirl and as long as I can get things up enough for Alfatina will leave it until tomorrow.

 Then tomorrow I will be:

 1. Remove Nvidia drivers.
 2. Use cleaner again.
 3. WITHOUT disc in, do a restart as a "dry run" to see if windows again finds software. (Just so I "know".)

Now I read a few places that as much as a kernal out of place can completely F*** GTR2 so now I know how to do a scandisk.....

 4. Once again remove GTL and GTR. THIS time, will run the cleaner to make sure all is gone.
 5.Run Scandisk and then defrag.
 6. Add graphics drivers. Run defrag again.
 7. Cross fingers and reinstall GTL and GTR2 once again.
 8. Not being a religious man do something close to praying. *giggle*
 9. See what happens, leave it alone after, say "bugger it" and start saving for a better graphics card.....

Now GTR is back to where it was.....

Okay. Taking a break until tomorrow, then going through EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

 Dammit.

So, it WAS at a point where I could play GTL but got the error code as I shut it down. (Haha) But now...GRRRR.

 Soooo........

Just reinstalled the old graphics card again. Better to play at all than not. I'm getting tired of this now.

Wife said "Maybe the new card is just defective?"

Kinda' scoffed but maybe????? I dunno.

So. GTR2 seems to work once again.

Still have to try GTL again  and about to.

Funny as I only got this to get GT Legends but as I dabbled more and more started to get addicted.

Even the F1 mod after Tysmyster got me to install it. I actually LIKED it and normally I rank Formula 1 right up there with NASCAR!! Haha.

Anyways. Going to get this working again and screw the new card.

 Lesson learned? Yeah.

*Don't waste time and money on a graphics card unless one can get a MUCH better one*

 Oops.

I may be methodical but I can also be very impatient......

 Maybe not..

It was working fine for the last hour. Started a race in the game. After doing practice, Qualy, did about 6 laps and it crashed.

Louie ("S" Interceptor) gave me some tips and a download to search the problem. Will try later but for now will turn the settings back down in GTL and try try try again! Hahaha.

I THINK I may have gotten somewhere after ALL DAY today also!

Since my last post I have lost track of how many times I wapped between the 2 cards, cleaned, defragged, installed, blah blah blah...

Let's just say it's started DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!

I tried to get on the Alfatina but could only do a lap or so and then less before crashing. The game not me. (For once!)

 Soooo........

This has been making NO sense to me.

Just a few minutes ago as it had gotten to the point that I couldn't even get on the Alfatina server without crashing, I had a really stupid and weird idea....

I was using gpuz to look at my specs thingies. Than cpuid to look at everything else. I'm sure the 2gb of RAM I put in were supposed to be dual channel. Says so right on it but cpuid says I have single channels (working anyways???)

So, I figured, What the Hell, I tried everything else and took a stick out.

Weird. Just did 4 laps of Goodwood and NO crash! Seems to be smoother too but I could be imagining that.

Anyways. Makes no sense, could be another false hope but going to see how it is in the morning and if GTL don't crash gonna start re-installing GTR2 and cross the old fingers!!

 Phew.

Looks like one of your memsticks is faulty, or not working well with each other.

Launcher is the app where you choose resolution with GTL.

Oh, okay, I have it at 32 bit 1024 x 768 and DX7. The screens are currently at 1024 x 768 also. I was swapping all the above between there and 800 x 600 with no difference.

As to the above question, the PSU is now a 650 watt, used to be 250. Plenty of power, doesn't even get warm. Sleeping giant as I planned. LOL.

Seems the RAM is the problem.

Is it possible I should have got single channel? My first thought when I thought oif removing one was to switch them position to position but figured that made even less sense! But I find PCs often don't!

How many memory slots your motherboard has?
Are the RAM exactly same type?
If you have 4 mem slots try to put em so that on first and third slot.

 It's only got 2 slots.

RAM is the same as I bought it as a pair the other day.

Just ramped the DX to 9, have it on the dedicated server, turned on the data aquisition, did a lap of Goodwood and all so far so good. Going to do a few morelaps (10 or so) and then start loading GTR2 again if no problems. It usually shuts down within 2 laps IF I actually got THIS far!

I only have 2 slots. Maybe this motherboard isn't designed for Dual channel? I was told otherwise but no one is perfect. Maybe when I have a spare few bucks I'll get some single channel sticks and try it again.

Just ramped up a bunch of settings (Not the moving trees and "click on here" ones), left the shadowing off and went out on Goodwood again. Man oh man what a difference!!!!!!

It IS worlds ahead of my old card. Might have to tweak (lower) some stuff eventually buyt at least it's working!!!!

Thank you thank you thank you ever so much everyone! I am ecstatic!

Now to get GTR2 back in there.

Sad to have missed Alfatina but there's always next week.

It might be just a tad incompatible with the mem, or maybe some bios setting is incorrect, they always dont default to correct settings.

All my old friends are dead or in jail. LOL.

So, just fired up GTR2, only thing I added was the patch and my plr and it works perfectly in DX9 and most of the settings up....Only did a few laps but......

"By jove, I think we've got it"

So, as far as I know the overclock is just the fsb frequency. Going to drop it down as I think the chip I have is supposed to be 800Mhz and is at 840. I think.

So going into the BIOS, going to write everything down, make the change, see if the PC still runs. (!!!)

If so, I will try to put the other stick of RAM in. If none of the above work, no big loss as I can reverse it to where we are now. But at least I now have a WORKING "baseline". Whew!!!

Okay, PC still working. Heehee. never found no fsb setting. I DID find "cpu clock" which was set at 210Mhz. Dropped it to 200. Checked and now cpu putting out 2.9995 Mhz....

3.0 Ghz cpu so reset cpu clock to 201 Mhz and now cpu at 3028.4.

Gonna try that and add RAM again....

 And...

4 1/2 laps of Goodwood in GTL and CRASH!! Hahaha. No error message though!!

So, I started doing some searches on BIOS and SDRAM and stuff.....

Changed my "Auto detect PCI/DIMM Clk" from enabled to disabled.

Did 6 laps of Goodwood on my dedicated server and NO problems! So far.....

Put the cpu voltage back to 201 mhz.

Now to run a BIG buncha laps because I think we got it!

One thing I have to say that was invaluable in this was this cpuz (CPUID) that I think Ted (2Shedz) told me about and Louie concured.

 So.

It was the Damn RAM. But now I got 2 GB. YAY!!! :burn him:

Now, as the point of having this stuff is to play, I must wander off and see if I can get a version of Goodwood for GTR2. What a fun track!!

So last night. Played a lotta laps of Silverstone, 5 am, raining. COOL!!

Thought today I would play GTL and GTR2. Fired up GTL and.....

1 1/2 laps of Silverstone and error message and shut down!

 BLOODY GO***** F****!!!!

Anyways, did it 2 more times, same result.

 Sooo....

Went back into bios, found the fsb stuff. reset the GPU back to 3 Ghz. (Buh-bye overclock, hahahaaaa) and found a default setting for the RAM stuff. (F6). Hit it, indeed see changes, and reset the above mentioned setting "Auto detect PCI/DIMM Clk" to disable again and...

I guess this stuff happens when you buy a PC used that's been modded. Ah well. Learning more than I really wanted too!

 Now, to DRIVE!!!!!!

Seems to FINALLY be working again!

Hey Den,

I downloaded the track pack too just now to see what was up. I think I know what went wrong.
The track folders are all in extra subfolders, I think you put in the folder one level too high. You were supposed to go into the folder and inside you would again, find a folder with the name of the track. Put that one in your locations folder and it should work.

What I always do to make sure this doesn't happen is this. I will extract a track, see a folder after it is done and go into that folder. Usually there is another folder inside it with the trackname. I will again go into the folder. If I see that there are separate files inside the folder, more than just one readme alone, actual trackfiles, I will know that this is the folder that I need to put in the locations folder. So, I go back up again one level and copy that folder which has the files in it and paste it in my locations folder.

Good luck.

I discovered I did that with the Goodwood track in GTL and when I did thought "I GOT IT!!!" but of course...LOL

I know when I did this, I separated the tracks by name but maybe there's different versions and I didn't go that far. I'll try again. Thanks Tysie. This also tells me I was doing it right lately! Heehee.
