NASJ GTL Round 1 @ Daytona Road Course
« on: July 26, 2009, 05:05:12 am »
Awesome racing guys.  This combo was a blast.

Race 1 was pretty ugly for me.  I crashed 3 times and fell back to 10th.  My quali time of 2:06.4 in the Daytona Coupe surprised the hell outta me because it was a full 2 seconds faster than my pb in offline practice.  But I couldn't maintain that pace in the race because turn 1 was too risky.  To run 2:06's I had to close my eyes as I slid around that turn.  That method wouldn't work too well in the race.  Although I did do that on lap two, and somehow Cobra managed to pass me as I was sliding at an angle that felt like I was completely sideways.  That was a brave move Cobra!  I need to see that one in the replay.  Unfortunately I don't have the race 1 replay, so if anyone has it and can upload it somewhere, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Race 2 was a lot cleaner for me.  I have a very stable setup for the TVR, so it's a much more comfortable car to drive than the Daytona IMO.  I have a lot more confidence with the TVR and it showed.  I'm very pleased to have gotten the pole (thanks to the top 4 from race 1 sitting out quali), and a 2nd place in the race.  No crashes, and just one half spin on lap two.  Nice job on the win Sherman.  I closed in on you at midnight when you went to the desktop, and I was pushing hard for those last several laps.  I couldn't catch you though.

Nice turn out tonight too.  Welcome to all the new drivers.

I had a blast out there tonight.  It felt real good to race with the old GT Legends; glad I dusted it off.
For race 1, I had the Daytona which was smooth as silk.  I qualified in the 2:07s which was a second faster than my pb.  I had a decent start & managed to hold my own but as i slowed down to avoid a car sideways on track, I got tapped from behind - it sucks when you try to avoid a collision but cause another one  :(
After the tap. I was in last place but I didn't let that get me down.  I grabbed my manhood &  pushed as hard as I could.  I got up to 8th I think behind Mr Dee but then I missed my brake marker for T1 & went off   .  I was looking at my fuel usage & wondering if I had taken enough.
Race 2 had more action.  I only got into the 2:08s with the TVR .  I managed to get through the mayhem  at the beginning & got up to 3rd for while.
I had some nice laps back & forth with a couple of guys (sorry I don't exactly remember the names - too many beers  :toast: ).  I was glad to see drivers holding their lines  & race cleanly.  Overall I'm happy with my 1st official race with the Junkies.  I'm anxious to do another with all you guys.

 :hats off:

It was a somewhat frustrating drive for me out there.  I was feeling pretty confident coming into the race and I think a P4 in the first qualifying was my PB by about 3 seconds.  Got off to an awful start and quickly lost ground.  Started pushing hard though and made back a few places.... Was pushing a little too hard into that chicane on the first lap, spun out and took myself into the wall, there goes suspension.  Hobbled around the track for a few laps until the car failed completely and I was out.

Suffice to say I was a little frustrated coming into race 2.  Both of these cars are monsters and once you set an angle its really hard to change direction.  I was a little nervous taking the more agile TVR into race 2 and just didn't push hard enough and ended up qualifying 7th.  It was going alright until that chicane again and I broke too early, which set up for a little nudge from behind and another spin in the chicane.  No big deal though, I keep going and managed to make up a lot of ground.  It seems I was cursed tonight and coming into the chicane again my cat decided it would be a good idea to stick one of his paws under my brake pedal.  Well that causes another accident and I've lost my temper.  Sorry too whoever I hit just after the chicane while i was attempting to come back on the field, I thought i was in last.  It was uncalled for though I just let my temper get the better of me and I stormed off.  I didn't want to end anybody else's race.   :shy:

Had a pretty good night considering I was expecting disaster  :)

Emerson, there is a good chance that was me that tapped you in race one. In the melee that was happening I thought you were going. I gather you weren't, I hope you can accept my appologies. I didn't know i did that to you. :sorry:

I didn't have any confidence for my abilities with the TVR and was suprised at how well it handled if you were respectful with it. It would have been nice if both cars had a wee bit more gear.

   Good first run I'd say.

               :D

That was me and darn :punt:... if you could of held on to that brake pedal 1 sec longer, i could of got by ya. Had Heatcan closing in on me, Was hoping you do me a favor and slow him down for me. ;)....Oh well,  :dunno: was trying to turn a tragic event into good. didn't work.

Don't worry about it. Been there, done that, have t-shirt  :D.... especially on the cat issues. This darn cat has jumped on my lap during races. I crash, then the cat crashs  :grr:

btw, Have cat for sale. loves racing....CHEAP!!

I didn't check the replay yet but don't worry about the tap if it was you Monsieur Dee.  Its all part of racing & braking unexpectedly will get you rammed from behind  :P  No harm done; I'm anxious for the next race.
In the meanwhile...    :occupied:

It was great to see the new guys out last night. Hope you all had fun.  :)  Oh and hey kite. Hang in there bud. When we went through turn1 side by side in race 2, I thought to myself now this guy can drive. Too bad you caught an edge. I was looking forward to a good battle. Next time for sure.

Race1: Er I couldn't catch Rocky.  :o not.
Shaky start on the banking, and JB slipped through on the inside, but then I got past at T3 when he went wide on cold tires. After that I drove like a maniac. I kept within a second or 2 of Rocky most of the race and actually started to catch him a bit. But as soon as that happened he laid down a couple of crazy fast laps in a row to put me 4 seconds back. With only a couple laps to go, I backed off for an easy P2. Great driving Rocky. Congrats.  :hats off:

Race2: Starting on the last row I got a pretty good start but nothing to write home about. Turn 1 was "just a bit congested" and I got knocked into the inside armco. No biggie there was bound to be some bumping there. So to the back of the field with Rocky on my 6 we exited onto the banking and drafted to the bus stop, which is where it got interesting. Too many cars in too small a space. I got sandwiched from both sides which actually was probably good as it kept me straight. haha! So I thought well just go straight take the cut track and get out of the melee. Then boom an orange TVR came flying in front of me from the left and I smacked him good. The car seemed to be ok, so on we go. I don't know what happened to Rocky, he must have got caught in the mess and damaged pretty bad. It looked like he had to pit.  :( So next lap around I had caught the front 4-5 drivers and at the same spot, (bus stop) again there were 3-4 of us trying to get through a small space way too fast. I thought I was going to take out the drivers in front since they were slowing faster than me, so I laid it sideways and took the wall instead. Back to P12.  :grr:
The car was a little squirrely to drive after that, but not so bad, so I just clicked off the laps as fast as I could. Managed to get up to P5 and was catching JB and Cobra with 2 laps to go. I thought maybe I could make it interesting with a 3 car battle to the finish but then they got together at T1 and gave me an easy route to P3 which is where I finished.  :) Congrats Sherm and Pete on a great drive for P1 and P2.  :hats off:
I had fun, and as I said on vent, the best thing about this track is that you can sip your cocktail while on the oval section. Sweet!
BTW, where was Earnhardt?

Yawn--do I want to race? I can barely keep my eyes open-Daytona? I never get that track right...
Qualifying didnt go so well-demoralizing when Rocky has 5 seconds on me. Got decent start on race one-went from 8th? to 4th for turn one. The leaders were out of site by lap four-and I drove around lonely for a 5th.

Race 2 I had to drive the Shelby. Only took a couple of Q laps-it seems more stable and got a 3rd for the grid.-Another good start + had the lead going into turn one (or in my case, almost turning into pit road!  :o Told you I was tired! ) Made sure I stayed on line + didnt screw up the 1st lap -I look in my mirror and see........nothing!? :hmm: Then I hear all kinds of "sorry!" Ok-make sure to get a little buffer-I'm up to a 7.5 sec lead-that should get me at least 3 laps with no pressure. A few laps go by + I still have the same gap I'm suprised because I wasnt setting the world on fire with lap times (I think I was only like 5th quick). And then midnite comes and I turn into a pumpkin! :grr: Something in my 'puter is set to go off at midnite and I go to desktop!  :grr:
DONT PANIC! It happened on the banking-ride it out-I get back into GTL and Im coasting down on the flat but still pointing forward. GAS IT! Get back on the track and I'm still in the lead-but now only 1.5 seconds. Ut oh! Now I need to push. Peter pressures me for the last few laps-but I manage to stay ahead til the race finally ended. A lucky win for sure-but I'll take it.  :hats off:
