I had some concerns as I wrote here:
"I was a wee bit worried about this last one as I realised the A110 motor was water cooled. Also pulled from the R8.
"iron-cast R8 Gordini engines the car was fitted with the aluminium-block Renault 16 TS engine. With two dual-chamber Weber 45 carburetors the TS engine delivered 125 hp DIN at 6000 rpm. This allowed the production 1600S to reach a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph)."
I never changed the weight or mpg as I figured there wouldn't be much difference. I still don't think the fuel mileage would be much different with that engine pushing that little mass. I suspect thast the lower profile of the Alpine would equal the lower weight of the Abarth. I think.......
Anyways, my next worry was cooling but I'm happy after finding the R8 itself had rear mounted radiators."
And now recall why I was intent on the Porsche motor. but then I'd have to muck about with mpg, and mass files and this car was meant to be a simple fun project. (Though it was surprisingly complicated in the doing. Was a true "tear the hair out" project.) Plus I was thinking it'd bug me in showroom and replays with the open hatch. I even was thinking what would fit as far as engines.
The Porsche, I was thinking would stick too far out, but also wondered if could mid-mount it by turning the transaxle around and fliping the ring gear. (As done when a Corvair engine is attached to a VW beetle transaxle as the Corvair is a reverse rotation engiine.)
And I DID indeed wonder about a small V8, and even was thinking as far as the Ford smallblock being physically slightly smaller then the Chev small block and slightly lighter too. But even with a GT40 transaxle..well, there's that Mini pickup that runs at Gopodwood with the GT40 drivetrain in it. And even that is the pickup with the longer wheelbase. And most V8's I've seen mountyed that way in Minis are the longer variants so....
I DID consider a chain drive with the transaxle under the engine (such as the 60's Olds Toronado) but then I'd have a high cg so......
THEN, I was thinking of the V6 from the Capri. But then the hp would be much higher then I wanted. and I thought of the Alfa's four and even for a second or two the Cortina, but thought it not agreessive enough soundwise.

And THAT was when I thought of the Alpine. EUREKA!!!
Anyways. That's the story and indeed I did think this project as a "real" car. hahahaaa.
