I've started......
« on: January 26, 2009, 09:09:47 pm »
Thanks to RSP, I am starting to build my "team". Hahahaaa..

The Lotus Cortina is a standalone, The Alfa I did today and is pretty much done but needs a few tweaks before I make it a standalone.

 Thanks man.

This is fun. My head spins trying to keep track but I fins sine last night it's getting easier.

I still can't figure out how to get decals to show on the windows. (My Photoshop seems not to have some of the same stuff..???)

Buit now I "get" adding the skin to an existing car before "committing" and having to start over. (Also taught me to save before "flattening"....)

Like seeing the above Alfa had the "head cut off" on the skull as the fender sweep cut it and the original placement of the rear SJ decal was cut off at the bottom.

This is the final as I'm planning to keep this one. I think though some placement is different, it still looks like a "team" with the Lotus Cortina...???? Yes? Maybe??? :hmm: :?:

What's funny to is the first "test run" of the Alfa I was rear ended by "MY" Cortina!! Bugger..... :rotfl:

Yeah the window thing  :)

If you enlarge this one you can see "The Beatles" is backwards in the rear side window  lol

 Okay. And the Beatles. lol

I got the Alfa standalone now too.

Um the ultra tex file...is it the same as the body1 file? resized? As I forgot it on the Cortina originally, so just used the resized version from the gtl file. Is that okay? Seems to be working fine....

 Next up...a MINI!!!!

 Thamks all for the encouragement.

Here's an "in progress" of my mini.

I still have some stuff to change and add but tired now and going to watch some Bollywood with MiLady.

Should have the wee bugger finished up tomorrrow. (Then I'm thinking GT40........)

The files called xxx_ultra_tex.gtl are the full sized textures, which are the same size as the templates you are painting on.  The files called xxx_tex.gtl are the half sized textures, which need to be half the size of the templates.

I assume you're working from a template.  The body1 template will be 2048 pixels by 1024 pixels (2048x1024).  You should export the DDS files at this size.

When you make a standalone, you also need to make half sized images (1024x512) for the xxx_tex.gtl files. So that people who don't tick 'High Resolution Textures' in the game set up can use the half sized (low resolution) files.

There's no point in resizing your textures back up to full size, the resolution is lost when you reduce the size...  you can't get it back!  You need to go back to the template and export new ones at the correct size.

So, if they look fine, then, leave them alone? Thanks Byron. All's well due to my habit of saving everything. haha. Had the templates (before flattening) to both the earlier cars so just fixed them up.  lol

 Mini's done.

And I added Lucio's (Ducfreak) sound mod to it too. For those that don't know, it's once again available at noGrip.

Just did the Jag MkII. Couldn't bring myself to slather a 4 door in decals so took a subtle approach at the rear window. Aso, added Minilites.

So, I thought of this last night but figured I'd remember but did I? Nope. Not 'til I was busy tonight. :rotfl: :rotfl:

But I got to thinking since race teams used to do things like colours etc "for their country" blah blah blah that I could add some subtle stripes in white and red to denote the colours of our flag.

So I did. Not gonna do the Alfa as I messed it up and flattened it before saving and had forgot to paint it. oops...

Then I decided I DO NOT want to do the whole damn car over again!! Maybe one day...or a newer version,,,or something. But for now? nope. Just the new stuff. Live and learn.

So the current and finished Cortina and Cooper.

It really does become an addiction. Haha. Makes playing much more immersive too me thinks. Still figuring out Photoshop. (Wonder if I should READ that "Photoshop Elements 7 for dummies" book the wife got me?? ...........maybe.....hahahahaaaaaaa.)

Keep thinking about the "next car I want to do" and well...then I start....I've got it down to 3 basic steps now once the template is finished to making it a standalone.

If you fancy making a note of the kind of places where you get stuck, Den, that info would be really useful for future RSP tutorials.

 :)

You've DEFINITELY got the bug though!  Don't forget to plug in your wheel now and again too!

I been taking them on track and I was thinking I got all these new games this month, yet am still totally addicted to GTL let alone finding time for GTR2 (plus F1 & p&g) and rFactor plus the new stuff....

Makes my "retirement" much more tolerable though! haha. (Went by my work a couple days ago, they think I''m NUTS because I miss it!! Wife told them how I DREAM [at night] of being at work....:)

Anyways. yeah. The biggest problem I had was the window stuff. But the commands for it seem to be missing from my Photoshop, The channels tab. Is that layers at the top? or layers at the right side there? Either way I can't find it.

But that could be MY doing as I just opened photoshop and startred DOING it. Heh. Should I suppose read the book at some point but so much going on at once.

It's nice to be busy again as my brain tends to be thinking at 500 miles an hour and 5 different levels/thoughts all the time and it's been a long time since I could keep it this busy. lol

Ah... it looks like Photoshop Elements doesn't have Channels, which means you won't be able to follow the alpha channel bits in the windows tutorial.  Maybe if you look in the help files to see how to edit alpha channels in Photoshop Elements, you'll be able to adapt what's in the tutorial.

Thanks for the info though, Den...  I didn't know that.  I've never used PS Elements.

Okay. When I figure it out, I'll definitely let you know.

Right now, I'm not worrying greatly about it. maybe once I get a batch of my cars done, I'll go back and retry the windows. Plus in the meantime I will read that book, it's a HUGE book!! (Plus I'm currently reading 3 others and have a pile of magazines I'm going through...lol )
