Installing add-on cars
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:06:08 am »
Would someone be so kind as to post a step by step tutorial on installing add-on cars please?
I goof around doing it by adding a new player name and adding in and taking out the .dyn file and eventually I get it by accident, but there must be a logical way to do this and retain your current save/all cars/all tracks/all money status.
If this is posted somewhere else, apologies. I haven't found one that is clear to understand and works for me.
Thanks in advance.  :)
Steve

Hmm, I just install them by extracting the files to the appropriate places and that's it. I have enough money from the first time I did the .dyn file and I just by the addon cars that I want to use.

What issues are you having Steve? Can you elaborate? I should be able to help more if I know the exact problem. Or maybe someone can already help you out better than I can at this stage.

I think Steve has a valid point as I know when I first started out at this stuff, there was a LOT of guesswork, especially since not everyone packs thweir add ons the same. I was lucky to have a few people here walk me through it. Maybe I'll take a crack at it a wee bit later.

Yeah, but Steve is no stranger to GTL.  :)

I'd just like to know the exact problem he is having.

Good point. Heck, he knows a lot more than I do!! lol

Though a basic tutorial would still be as good idea me thinks?

Ok guys. Sorry my bad, but since I always have problems with this I figured everyone did.  lol
Let's start at the beginning.

I have quite a few add-on tracks of course. I also have a few of the add-on cars. I have the TG2001.dyn file located @ root. I have the SimJunkies Car Pack installed. I have one driver name.

Here's what happened last night while loading the cooper 1310 mod which has been typical for me when installing other add-ons like the 935, corolla, and e21.
I extract the archive to an empty folder then copy the files to the appropriate teams folder. ie TC65, etc.
When I start the game and try to drive the new car, none of that car's different variations are available to me to use. They are all greyed out. I can see the car name, and I can view it on the garage display, but I cannot buy them.
So I create a new driver name, choose that name as active, and close the game. Then it gets a bit fuzzy with all the things I have tried. Sometimes the game won't let me delete my old driver name sometimes it will. So I mess with taking out the dyn file, putting it back in, shuffling names, etc. until magic happens and I have all tracks and all cars available again.
Only this time I have all cars available but the default tracks are greyed out now.  :grr: Add-on tracks no problem using them. 477 of 477 cars are available. Funds are at 10,000,000,000 or some other ridiculous number. So the dyn file seems to be working to a point. One curious thing that may be contributing is that my status says 0-25 challenges or events completed. Odd?
Any suggestions would be appreciated gents.(I know. I know. It's probably re-install time.) :sulk:
Thank you!
Steve

Well I know mine has said that since the beginning so I don't think that has anything to do with it at all Steve. I have had to do the dyn file shuffle before myself but not to the extent that you have documented, it unlocked all without issue. I have nothing else to offer at the moment buds, good luck with this bummer situation  :hats off:

Here's what I did. It's not pretty or elegant, but it seems to work repeatedly so far.   :tut:

If when installing an add-on car you are not able to buy the add-on car or it is not unlocked even if you have the TG2001.dyn file installed in GTL root folder:

1. Go to GTL/userdata/(your username) folder. Copy your <username.plr> file and your settings folder to desktop.
2. Start game and go to profile. Create a new driver with a different name.
3. Load that driver as active.
4. Exit GTL
5. In explorer again go to GTL/userdata folder. Fully delete (or optionally copy to desktop first) your original username folder.
6. Start game and go to profile. Create a new driver with your original desired username.
7. Load this driver as active.
8. Delete the "temporary" or different name driver.
9. Exit GTL.
10. Copy the <username.plr> file and settings folder that you saved to desktop in step #1 into the GTL/userdata/(your username) folder.

And that ought to do it friends and neighbors.  :)
