Depends what you are upgrading from.. when the new one is released then 295 no doubt will drop in price.. so id say wait anyway and see which one is the best option at that time.
This said with the new hardware released all the time, you could always be waiting for the next one.. best thing is just to go for something you fancy.

Like Jarkko said: you can always wait for the next one.

btw I would take 2 4890's in crossfire instead of a gtx295. It even costs less...

i got a radeon hd4850 in my pc at work . its ok i just prefer intel and navidia now . I used to have amd and cross fire but on crysis it just wouldn`t handle it so i went built an intel machine with a 8800 gtx since then ive stuck with them .

id say wait if you already have a near top of the line card now wait and see what the new chips bring to the table ... what resolutions do you play at and what is the rest of your comp like?

lol, I hope you play other games then simrace games as you don't need such high end system for them.

You know I used to be a bit like you, always wanting something better. But the right question imo is: is the GTX 280 not sufficient for what you use your pc  :?: Sure a GTX 295 is better, but what benefit will it offer (and at what cost) :?: Just a few thoughts...

id prob go for 2 4890 ati in crossfire,  as kristof said rather than a gtx295 for the price.........although i had heard that ATI werent to hot on their driver updates for the crossfire setups,  and they were causing a few issues.....dunno if this is true or not?

Also like Kristof says unless your playing real high end games graphically.......why would u need more that the 280gtx thats still a super card,  id spend the money on a new board instead

 seems a decent review here.

But i agree with Kristof. Not worth it when you already have a kickass card. I know my 260GTX rocks on FSX, TDU, and pretty much whatever I can throw at it.

A more interesting review here as it contains the HD4890 CF and the newer spec GTX295 as well. Anyway I find both solutions to expensive, my advice is to buy the HD4890 or a GTX275 (whatever is cheapest, in Belgium it's the HD4890)

Don't want to off topic this too much, because that's not allowed at Simjunkies, but I was wondering about people's thinking regarding DX11?
From what little I've read (and I'm well aware it could just be marketing hype to shift units) they claim that developers will be skipping dx10 and jumping from the 9.0c sdk directly to the 11 (easier to programme, more feature rich yada-yada).

I have no regrets about buying the 8800 when it was 'new gen', it's served me well and will have to keep serving me for the foreseeable, but if someone was willing to dish out ££££/$$$$ in the near future, would there be any sense in waiting a couple of months for the DX11 skus to come to market?

There are no DX11 graphics card out right now. ATI/AMD cards are DX10.1, which encorporates some DX11 features, while nVidia cards are 'only' DX10.
ATI/AMD have announced that their DX11 graphics card will be released when Windows7 is in the stores (Octobre 22), nVidia will probably release their first DX11 graphics card a few months later.

most games are not even DX10 why get a DX 11 card? your fine with what you have now i say wait another 8 months or so and see about it then ... of course unless you are playing the latest games and want to run at like 80+ fps on high quality

Perhaps the right time could be to wait until end Octobre, hopefully the first DX11 graphics card will be released then...

I wouldn't think it impossible. The technologies are backwardly compatible and it would add a nice bit of marketing spice a la DiRT2

DirectX 10 is not backward compatible in fact. For DirectX 11 you'll need Vista or Windows 7.

I meant that games written with the capability to use DX11 will also run on DX10 or DX9c

Other thing that has been playing on my mind is my motherboard being Abit IP35-Pro Intel P35 (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard with PCI Express and not PCI Express 2......and as the new GFX gards are PCI E2.

Will i be loosing anything at the moment, i am told not a lot uses the speed/bandwidth of PCI E2 as yet...
The sales people tell me not.........but they would say that lol

found this simple explination on yahoo answers site by Christopher .

PCIe x16 means it's a stadnard PCI Express card that has 16 lanes which it can transfer data to and from the motherboard. More lanes = faster speed.

PCIe v2.0 is a new (Jan 07) specification which basically allows for a theoretical increase in data bandwidth from 0.25 to 0.5GB/s. In straight forward terms though, PCIe 2 has not fully taken off yet, since even motherboards with a P35 chipset (VERY common these days) dont have full support for them.

Cheers for that.
