I'll throw my hat in. I put new pickups in my 62 Jazz bass clone today. A pair of Seymour Duncan SJB-1 's . They are a vintage series, single coil.

They sound fantastic. My slap playing isn't up to snuff at all but here's me playing along to "Brick House" by the Commodores.

The main tune is a midi file that I edited a little and added my own VST instruments.
Brick House (http://jndkramer.com/files/Jon_Tunes/Brick%20House%20Playalong%2001-07-2009.mp3)

I wish I could write like you guys. I have no proper training. I'm at the mercy of my mp3 collection or what ever decent midi's I can find online.

Damn fastaff, that's really cool. I like the swampy sound. It gives me a Steely Dan vibe too.

Thanks for the nice compliments I really appreciate it. i'm a big Earth Wind & Fire fan myself. I've got a couple playalongs I've done to thier stuff but I'm not happy with the results yet.

Here's one I did after dinner this evening. I found an excellent midi arraingement of Chicago's "Beginnings", again swapping the crap genera midi sounds for VST instruments and playing my Bass along to the result. This time it's the Squier P bass. I'm getting to really like it. when i started playing again last july, I figured myself to prefer Jazz Bass's. This thing is changing that in a big way for me. I'm loving the thump it gives and the airy overtones.

I'm running it direct into the PC using a Presonus Firebox interface, then into a VST plugin called Ampeg SVX. it's an all Ampeg  Bass Amp and Cabinet emulator. It's got some awsome sounds. The amp I used on this is the SVT4 Pro and the cab is the venerable ampeg 8x10.

This song is signifcant to me in a lot of ways. I can totally remember being 7 or 8 and cranking this when my parents were'nt home on the family stereo. I'd get out a tennis raquet and Jam some mean air guitar.

I'd practiced this only 2 or 3 times before recording this, and there are some goofs. I'm also not doing a note for note cover. I rarely do, mostly because I usually can't lol. This is just me playing what I've been hearing in my head for 40 years of listening to this tune.

Hope ya like it.

Thanks again for the response. I'd love to do something together and I can and do know September. I have an arraingement around here somewhere of it that I did a while ago. I've been meaning to revisit it.

Let me know what you need, I can provide individual tracks or a mix minus whatever in wav aiff or whatever you'd need.

Making music is one of my MANY, MANY, MANY hobbies.  Told y'all I had a lot. :)  I'm DECENT, but nowhere near the best.  Here are three of my original pieces (I use MIDI still, but I run it through a high-quality soundfont)

http://www.box.net/shared/4r1jo5k34g - My first and last crack at a full-blown orchestral piece.  It proved to be a bit of an ass to put together, so I never made another one like it.

http://www.box.net/shared/nkss1j8zoo - I actually won a contest at Gamefaqs.com with this one once, however I didn't need the prize, so it kind of nullified the win, but it was pretty cool nonetheless.  Supposed to be looping game music.

http://www.box.net/shared/r66x96pi3x - I am a HUGE Sci-Fi fan.  Star Trek, Star Wars, Andromeda, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica (haven't watched the latter two, but I KNOW I'd like 'em if I caught 'em.).  So, this song was an attempt to capture the "essence" of space shows like that, inspired by a ship design I made in Paint/GIMP ( http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/Draconiator/GenerationshipVictoryFinal.jpg ).

I also wanted to compose professionally for video games, but my own damned cynicism kept me from doing that...Too bad too, that is what I had my heart set on.  :(

Thx Casper yeah I should but never had the confidence
to do it more often, one day i'll try again if I get the nerve
up to do it. My mother was trained singer soprano she sang at a lot of clubs in Wales and England and church choir etc. I really like jazz singers the complexity of that singing is amazing to me. You guys can sing like that wonderful voices much admired here. Thx M8

Here's my latest, Rock Steady, by Bad Company.

There's a bunch of new stuff on this.

I found some cool mixing instructional videos and am trying some of the techniques I
saw.
First is using an analog channel plugin on my master out bus. that's to add some life into the mix that the digital recording takes out. I'm trying to get better at mixing but I'm still pretty bad.

next is a guitar synth plugin called realstrat. Adding to that, I output its sound to guitar rig. The guitar parts on this are all from a cheesy midi file from the net. In fact everyting on it is except the bass. Everythings re-routed thru VST's to give the final result.

I used my Fender Jazz Bass on this (the yellow one) and the ampeg amp plugin set to an old svt and a 8x10 cab

The mix is sill off, my ears are tired so I'm quitting here before I do something stupid.

here's the raw test CLICK (http://jndkramer.com/files/Jon_Tunes/RS%20mix%20test%201.wma)

My first rip!

It's a song I made together with one of my pupils. (he sings)
Don't mind the technique ok, it's about the song.  :)
He came up with the poem by Lord Byron, She walks in beauty.
Then he made a melody, we refined it together and I wrote the chords to it.

At the moment we have a new project.......he came with a 3 pages poem by Edgar Alan Poe!
We'll work it out though, hahaha!

It's been a while since I visited this thread. Great work all !  I've been busy working a "Real" job and haven't had a lot of time for playing. I'm trying to work up the funds to get a proper amp and cabinet and a few other trinkets. I'm really close to my goal and it's getting time to making some chioces.

I did take some time on my day off yesterday to do this one, In The Stone by Earth Wind and Fire. And fastaff, this could use some real guitar on it instead of the wonky realstrat plugin and an amp emulator. If your interested I'll make you a version without the guitar track.

In The Stone (http://jndkramer.com/files/Jon_Tunes/In%20The%20Stone%20Mix%20Test%2003%20-%2001-31-2010.mp3)

BTW, I'm really trying to get my head around mixing these things and it's a tough fight lol. I have no idea what I'm doing and it's all trial and error. I could use some help from you guys on any egeneral tips for EQ and or volume levels.

Jon good job man on the bass as thats a very tough tune to do I can tell that. I will try playing to it today see what fits in or not. Pete thx for your expert advice you know more about mixing etc. than I do as I just do everything on the fly its the only way I can do a mixdown no real training. Thx Heat for your input as well. Its good that there is some interest in the thread still we all enjoy the music regardless of how the mix is done.  Everyone hears it differently anyway so really stick to your own gut feel, thats what I do most of the time one good thing is after you mixdown a tune play it in the car or on a inexpensive boombox that usually tells a lot about the sound. That was told to me by a engineer friend who worked with lots of well known artists. Keep the music flowing thats the main thing see you soon.           :funk:              :funkydrum:             :hats off:

Its a good job of mixing....much better than most.  The snare needs a bit more 'verb. Its kinda odd to here such a dry snare sound....unless that was the effect you were going for, and the bass could use a bit more compression, it overwhelms the mix a bit when it really hits. (I'm listening on headphones, so my comments may be taken with a grain of salt.)

Kramer, it's because bass (and bass drum) is very very difficult to reproduce correctly.
Title: Re: Music Corner
Post by: [SJ]kramer5 on February 01, 2009, 06:03:36 am
The bass isn't being reproduced, it's being played lol, by me. (it's the only thing that IS being played by me lol)It sounds awsome in cubase, it's something in the mixdown sucking all the life out of it.

I think I may know what it is. Or at least part of it. Soem of these synth based songs wind up being like 16 tracks. Some a few more, most less. But I never bounce anything before I output the stereo mix. I just use the export/mixdown feature of cubase and let it cram all the tracks together. On the next one I think I'm bonna bounce stuff myself, foing from whatever the original track count is to 2, and then output that. Or is that too old school for digital mixing?
Title: Re: Music Corner
Post by: [SJ]fastaff on February 01, 2009, 06:29:04 pm
Mixing is an art unto itself but playing is the real art in the end thats what counts. Even really good studios with great engineers get it wrong. Joe Pass a great jazz guitarist when he played live or recorded never used any reverb or any effect because he thought it was'nt true to the real sound of the insrument. I could never play like that unless its a certain acoustic feel I was trying to get.So mix it to your ear first then play it alot loud and quiet thats what I try to do if you can hear everything clearly on low volume and nothing overides anything then your close to a true mix. Adding textures to mixes is the hardest thing i've found as it tends to over do the tune but I fall into that trap myself like more is better kinda thing but I really want to try less is more to see the difference. At the end of the day its the feel of the music regardless of the mix as long as you like it and it sounds good then let it fly. But Im no expert only a player with a home studio so i'l try anything over and over to see what it feels like, its still fun to just play and not sweat the small stuff enjoy it first the rest comes later. Thx guys for your interest and expert advice and to just chat about music is really great I think it helps us all.              :funk:              :hats off:

I'm working on Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder today. The horn break is whippin my butt. The rest of the tune is fairly easy but that part is getting to me. I've never played that high on the fretboard let alone on the E string lol.

I have to say, the Bass player that played on a lot of Stevies stuff, Nathan Watts, is friggin amazing, he and Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan among many more) are 2 of my all time favs. Both of them take the Jamerson style, update it somewhat and expand on it in beautiful ways. Sometimes the beauty comes out in very human like, almost singing parts, and other times it comes out in down and dirty, deep fried, grease bucket funk.

Sir Duke has, to me a really interesting bass part. the beginning apreggios over the vers's remind me of Sir Paul and his ooom pa pa tuba style emulation, playing arpeggios off the root note, then the pre-chorus changes to a funky syncopated line and back to the ooom pa pa mixed with funk for the chorus. Doubling the horn line tops it off. It's not like it wasn't funky enough alone, but the bass doubling it makes it really swing.

Ok, had my ciggie break, back to school lol.

Jon your very clued into music man im impressed with your knowledge of others as well as the bass playing part thats because without the bass and drums there's no foundation to build on. I am working on a tune right now thats kicking my ass a bit the stereo track is not loud enough and I cant boost it any higher so might have to rerecord the whole thing over again BUMMER !!!
But I have'nt given up on it yet its giving me a challenge to deal with, anyway playing is easier than recording thats for sure. Talk to you soon keep up the good work man.

wow thanks bud. I do agree the drums came out a little dry. Trying to get the bass sound is the hardest for me. Probably becaues I'm a bass player and I'm really picky lol.

Ok, had a chance to listen again on speakers.  Much better this time.  The bass is too boomy on the E string, probably too much low eq (around 60hz) on it and it could use a bit more compression (with a bit of a long attack, like 8-10ms, to let the pluck sound through). I suspect that the life of the bass part is really being sucked out by the mp3 compression, though, not anything in cubase.

The drums sound great (snare is a bit dry), but they need to be more dynamic in the "verse" parts of the arrangement. They sound a bit robotic there (though I admit to having a human drummer that sounded like that, too), and that sucks some of the life from the bass energy also.

The hardest part of mixing, I think, is to separate yourself from your own playing.  It never fails that the guitarist wants a better guitar sound, the bassist better bass, the drummer more drums, etc.  That's why record companies pay for producers.

One bit of advice I would give anyone that wants their mixes to sound better is to buy a good set of studio monitors.  You won't believe how much better your mixes will sound when you mix on them (your mixes will sound like crap on the studio monitors, that's their job. But the mix will sound sooo much better when played through standard systems).  They are as essential to music as a steering wheel is to sim racing.

Post by: [SJ]HeatCAN on February 02, 2009, 05:25:53 pm
You are absolutely right, SS.  I was just about to post that a good set of monitor speakers is positively essential!  I'm fortunate enough to have a set and it makes the job a whole lot easier!

Also, fast (and everyone else for that matter), I wanted to turn you on to a online radio station I listen to:

http://www.live365.com/stations/bamman

I run it in winamp, after setting it as a bookmark.  Then I don't have to go through live 365.

Enjoy!

Kramer (and everyone else for that matter), I heard this incredible bass piece the other day on Serius radio.  I will post it up later when I get home.  I think you will appreciate it!

Yes SS I agree with you about the monitors they have to be quality or they will not produce a true sound. When I bought my Yamaha in 2005 it was expensive as hell but the one thing is the quality of the gear that counts my monitors are Tannoy reveals with very good amp at the time the speakers were $ 600 but the sound from those monitors are very clean I really like them alot they also have good bass ,mid range tone so they suit my little setup fine. Also like your tunes very euro tec sound very cool man could be a soundtrack for something.Thx for your addition to the Music Corner always appreciated cheers.             :funk:

Thanks Fastaff. I actually lucked into my studio monitors.  After doing live sound for a couple of bands, I though I had good enough ears to not need them. A salesman convinced me otherwise and sold me a demo pair of NS10's for around $300.  I hated those speakers....until I heard my tracks on a standard stereo.  Good monitors are very revealing (and the Tannoys are VERY good.  I'd love to have a pair.)

I'm going to be honest Steve ... I'm loving the guitar work, the percussion and the mix ... but the synth lines .. well ... not feeling it mate, all seems a bit 70's porno track.

Seems like a good idea at the time, but leaves you feeling worthless and exploited?

Hehe

Good one Byron yes it does leave you exploited but the mind says yes at the time and the body follows silly the way that works. Oh! what are we talking about again porn right? lol by the way I like your applicant song very much indeed reminded me of the bonzo dog do dah band

I know what you mean man.
As a singer it has hurt me big time that I didn't sing enough the last couple of years, more teaching than anything else.
All kinds of causes. But last week at a pupils presentation I did my own arrangement of  'Georgia on my mind' in full blast, held nothing back......something happened....MAN I SANG!  :D So I know what you mean.

I need to get me an interface (bloody money) so I can put music on the puter and share it with you guys or do some singing on your songs if you'd want me to.

A while ago I did a little vid and a couple of Junkettes (Jon and Ian) got their hands on it and added their own stuff to it. I thought it was a right laugh, so I've done a little 'one take wonder' that is full of mistakes but might serve as another base for you lot to add your stuff to (blues harp, bass, dobro, strangled chicken... whatever you fancy.

There's a video file (http://www.box.net/shared/elnoz3bh7u) and an mp3 (http://www.box.net/shared/d1krngdige) for you to work your magic one :)

Don't worry too much about timing, levels etc. (I certainly didn't!), just have a bit of fun :toast:

One of the best jazzers ever in my limited knowledge. I get the modes, I understand the voicings, but there's still a bit of me that screams 'thank fuck for Punk!'
I'm not wanting to be rude, and I spend a lot of time listening to excellent players, but sometimes it's good to let intelect take a back seat to full on cacophony :)

Well no problem Pete no offense taken, if you ever get the inclination to see The History Of Jazz by Ken Burns check it out sometime its really quite amazing documentary on what jazz and blues did for the beginning of modern music as we know it today but im not putting it above other forms of music. It was just the foundation of many genres.   :funk:

Yo Chris never saw the Headbangers doc but the last one The Great Rock n Roll Swindle was'nt that about the band Badfinger? How they were taken for a ride then never paid them anything after they toured the States.
Think that was  it right? Anyway it was a tragic ending to that story 2 of the band members committed suicide if I remember and the last member died after a long legal battle which they won. Very good doc very sad ending. Great band too they wrote some cool stuff. Think I have their album ( on vinyl of course ) showing my age now lol anyway thx for the post will checkout the Headbangers maybe netflix has it.          :funk:

Nice Steve :)
When I saw the name 'Stanley', it immediately brought back a memory of when Sue and I were first married..., scrimping and saving for our first house. We got one in the cheap part of town, but it had a library, and the library would loan out tapes, the first one I booked out was Stanley Jordan .. man, so many years ago..

What year Mustang Fastaff? I only ask as my 87 wouldn't start once, turned out there was a fuel shutoff switch that was activated somehow and that's all it was.... The shut off switch is usually only activated if the vehicle was in an accident. Mine wasn't though and I am not sure how it was enabled, long time ago this was.

Just thought it best to throw that info out there for ya :)
Title: Re: Music Corner
Post by: [SJ]fastaff on May 23, 2009, 05:15:31 pm
Thx JB for your Mustang info yeah I thought it was the shutoff switch myself after lots of investigating the ford shop found it was a bad fuel pump. I asked about the shutoff switch and they said no they traced it to the pump.So the car runs very smooth now and psi is back to factory specs WOW !!! more horses for sure feels like when I first got it, mind you it only has 39,000 its a 98 Mustang GT I really love the car reminds me of the bigger brother to my old Capri.

Hi guys, long time no type.  Good to hear some of the new stuff.

Here's my latest, did it with a kybd player I met on ejamming, it's called Little Sun Flower, an old Freddie Hubbard tune. We reworked it a little.

There's a long silence at first, i need to cut that out, it takes a few seconds to get going

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I've been listening to a lot of Marcus Miller latey and I think a little, very very little, is beginning to rub off.

You, and anyone else that would like to ought to check out ejamming. It works amazingly well. I've jammed live with people all over the world.

Very cool thx Jon yeah its been busy lately for me what with family out of town visiting.
Anyway im back to playing a bit more these days so I can relax a bit more now ive got more time to jam. Not sure im as setup as you are with ejamming right now dont have all those toys one needs to jam online. But I will look into that sometime lots of expenses lately at my end so will have to wait awhile. But it does intrigue me to want to try it out. Cheers Jon keep up the great playing mate.

Great stuff nice action shots thx. Ok here goes this is a photo from long ago of the group I started called the Comets just stumbled on this takes me back in time Loooonnnggg time. Im in front lower right hand side the teeny bopper with a Guild guitar my mother bought for my birthday Wow!! I know it cost her a fortune back then, 139 guineas = 1 pound 1 shilling money was really tight then anyway I was a real lucky kid and wish I had kept that guitar but part exchanged it for another. I have a videorecording on Facebook from a performance with one of my students last week.
It's a poem by Edgar Allen Poe, 'The  Raven', put to music by us. Rob did the melody and I did the chords thingy.
If you're really into classic poem reciting this might be no fun but I want to show it anyway. It's an experiment.  :)

Thx guys glad you liked my memory lane it means a lot to me that place in time was great growing for me. We were just kids having fun playing Stones and Beatles songs basically, but we actually had a great following for those days as we were a little gritty compared to the other local bands and the girls loved it LOL. We thought back then it would never end and we would go on forever but it of course it did'nt.
Cas I have'nt signed up yet but I will to Face Book ok. Cheers guys.

Listen!
IBRAHIM, ABDULLAH - A BROTHERWITH PERFECT TIMING (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C92LjvRSzzU&feature=related#lq-hq)

I want to know what the title of this song is.
I wept, after 3 notes halfway through the vid.

It's written by a hero of mine, Dollar Brand aka Abdulah Ibrahim, pianist from South Africa.

Here's the whole song, rather badly played saxophonewise, but hey, it's a start.
abdullah ibrahim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5sVfcAmwSw&feature=related#lq-hq)

FOUND IT!

It's called 'the wedding'.
Thanks for stopping by, haha.  lol

I think Pete might like this version:
The Wedding - Abdullah Ibrahim ( Franco Morone Cover ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgizZu_JF8k&feature=related#lq-lq2-hq)

And yes, with master A. behind the grand, at Montreux.
Dollar Brand - The Wedding - Montreux 1980 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh48I7YhIyY#lq-lq2-hq)

I want lyrics...... :hmm

I accidentally heard Abdullah Ibrahim on the car radio four or five years ago, he was playing some ostensibly simple piece, mostly just 4ths and 5ths with lots of silence in between. It was absolutely captivating. When I got home I gorged myself on what I could find on the net. I haven't thought about him since... maybe it's time I back catalogued.
Thanks for this Cas :)

He's perfect in entwining simple folk songs and brilliant melodies and rhythms of Africa that will flip you over in no time. Here's what I mean
Abdullah Ibrahim - Belleayre Music Festival 07 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DTDPH9rgh0&feature=related#lq2-hq)

Ok, this is my first interloping from the foodies to the Music Corner.

But what makes a guy who's got it made like Brent Mydland fark it all up?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Mydland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Mydland)

I mean he was a mean piano player and got the big gig.  He was set.  And then he had a big hit with "Tons of Steel" in 1989 after 8 or 9 years with the group and he overdoses within a year or two.

rip Brent

Jeff Beck and Billy Cobham, awesome!!  I've got that JB show in HD, and I've seen Billy several times, as he is one of my top 3, being a drummer and all.  Saw him once in a small, and I do mean small, club in Tampa, just jamming...incredible.  That was truly and all star lineup w/ Mahavishnu Orchestra.  Birds of Fire comes to mind.

Fast, also forgot that I promised you the link to my fav online radio station...

http://www.attentionspanradio.net/ (http://www.attentionspanradio.net/)

You can point it to your mp3 player, save as a bookmark, then just play it there.  You will still want the playlist though at the website.  I use winamp, but any will do.  This is the free one which doesn't have the quality of the full paid version, so upgrade if have the coin for the q sound and no coms, at live365.com

Enjoy!   :funkydrum:
