Flight Sim problem.. which one to get :(
« on: August 01, 2009, 10:49:23 am »
Ok.. which one to get?
I borrowed bit of money to get my stick out from the post office, but i only have money to buy one flightsim for now (SJ and wifey take their share).

Flight Sim x Deluxe or X-Plane 9 (I enjoy actual flying more than combat, and used to play some microsoft sims ages ago)
DCS Black Shard (spent 2 hours watching cockpit procedure videos on youtube last night.. very tempted to get it)
Rise Of Flight (Simple planes so biggest learning curve and challenge comes from actual flying)

Why no one plays X-Plane?
Do you need crapload of addons to make FSX fully enjoyable?
Is DCS techically ok (performance etc), do we play this online?
Does ROF look as good as pictures promise? How the planes fly compared to il2? Will we play this online?
Which one would be best option for single player fun?
Any other sims i should consider buying in the future?

ROF is available as digital download from Aerosoft, so i might go for that as others need dvd.. i kinda fancy digital distribution..
but im not sure.. too many to choose from!
lol

btw this is the third time i write this post, went buggered twice.. my connection dropped for a moment.. then X-Plane 9 demo install apparently locked the pc on second time..
so its much shorter than the couple first post.. grrr.

FSX is awesome. Some of the sceneray is kinda lame but all in all quuite good for what they've done. Add ons are nice but not neccessary at all.

I read something a while back that said X-plane has questionable dynamics and I believe also the sceneray is real crap though I saw one comment on it from one person that said he prefers it in the flying and didn't get it to look at scenery. lol

there is a crapload of info at this forum:

http://forums.flightsim.com/vbfs/

I'm "Petrolhead" there. lol Den was taken.

I don't know about the others but I know FSX is awesome!! That reminds me, I haven't 'flown' in a few days...TDU took me....Haha.

Oh, and with FSX, there's a few here that fly together.

I'm not making a decision for you m8ey,

FSX.. well.. according to you nobody plays it...
X-plane    nobody plays it (yes.. there are sneaky devils out there, but i guess they are too dug in to give us a whiff of the product)
dsc      well.. one helluva simulator, but i'm not tempted to buy it as much as i used to.
RoF    well.. i guess this one hasn't "risen" yet, i'm pretty sure that once that takes off, the boys will be flying for about 2-3 months on a weekly basis.. i like it, but havnt touched it for a week now.. been through the 5 practicemissions and tried the 6th once, not a soul online with this at my timezone i recon, but haven't touched the online section. It's not really accurate. the flying that is.. it's not like you point and shoot.. well.. you do.. but shoot ALOT as it's swirving every chance it gets.. I do think this however stacks up there with the big boys, was definately worth my money, be it alone for the "must have" and "be first to have it"  hahahaha

Woof ~ Woof

your system is alot faster then mine m8ey, so i think you're definately getting closer to those screenies then i am. But mine runs stable on medium settings. I bet in fsx you cant run everything maxed out either.. which i can in fs9.. duhh.. 5 years after it's release.. i'm expecting the same from FSX and RoF... well.. RoF maybe a bit earlier for me...But this question is already half an hour old, so i recon you've bought something already!

Well, just spent an hour in the demo, and it runs maxed neatly (with AA and other bollox). Ground shadows drop the frames occasionally to 25ish (at least in thunderstorm) but never below that.
I enjoyed it quite bit.. hmm.. well.. I think im gonna buy something i can fly with James and Cato, as they are propably mostly around to fly with me anyway.

I will be as objective as possible now.

FSX. This is a great sim if you wanna fly by yourself. I really see no superb action online unless you are wearing a captains hat and usually stroll about in the airport lounge.
I enjoy a quick 30 minute fly from time to time, but I really do not get caught into it to much.
Yes you do need some addons to enjoy it. Otherwise it looks to damn ugly and is to damn hard on the system. (install all service packs, Thats very important.)

X-plane 9 I cannot say much about... I think you need a bunch of addons to even find it remotely nice.

IL2 you have and know about.. So i will say no more.

DCS BlackShark.
This is a full blown heli simulator. If you like a challenge, then this will give you just that.
It is difficult, but there are things you prob will never use much. (such as full manual start and shut down) But everything else will still give you a high learning curve. More even then IL2 gave you the first time.
There is much much electronic compare to IL2 wich is about flying and not much electronic.
It is the best Heli sim I have ever flown and I do fly it online as soon as more people will join me. That is fun. and like GPL it gives you a very nice feeling once you have mastered something.
Huge maps with good looking scenery. Weather system that works.

ROF. I dunno. Seems nice, looks nice. Old planes is fun, but I like WW2 planes and not so much WW1. but thats me though.... Planes from 1938+++ is nice 1915++ not so nice.
I will prob get it though. As it is probably very nice online with friends.

LOMAC FC
I like this one. Modern aircrafts and made by the same guys as DCS BLACKSHARK.
Also a very high learning curve with all the weapons system and a lot of electronics. Flyes easy enough, nothing difficult there until you get a couple SAM and SHILKA after you.
Huge maps and nice scenery. If you like modern aircraft combat, you would have had this a long time ago.

My choice would be BlackShark or ROF.
As I own BlackShark.... You figure.

I have all the others as well. Uhhh. I do not have X-plane 9 anymore. I just did not at all like it...... I need to shoot something aswell as flying. :)

Argh.. great replies guys.. it just makes it much harder lol

I think if i get ROF and DCS im playing with fire, but it might be possible to get both.. then bit later FSX.

I've read bits and pieces of you guy's flying about in IL2, and how quite a few of you met each other in this activity, I've got all the car racing stuff I care for and not much interest in getting my ass shot off in wargames anymore, so any input on what flight sim to get and what joystick should one get started with is of interest to me. And can you just imagine the results of me in a B52 fully loaded with pins pulled for combat, why.. it would be EPIC I tell you  :rotfl:

For a reasonably cheap stick Logitech force 3d pro and logitech 3d pro? are pretty good options i reckon, ive had both and nothing special in them, just do what they do very well.. you need to be right handed for them though.
For a sim.. get il2 from steam, only 10$.

I don't think any of these games are going to rival the times had in IL-2.  Although I haven't said anything yet, I am tinkering with ways to get a flight day in for SJ each month.

I love Black Shark, and it is very much a sim. I think it will be hard to get large amounts online together as it takes so much work to learn to fly it.

I think ROF is the best way to go if you must have a new Sim.  I love flying the old stuff in IL-2, and when I get the money I will be buying ROF.  You know we'll be doing some group stuff with that one down the line.  Again though, I don't think it can bring the groups or the pain like IL-2.

Cam, it's available in Australia here:

http://www.gameswarehouse.com.au/longpage.asp?gameid=17748

I've bought games on-line from Games Warehouse, they are reliable.

Thanks Warren, I do like the digital download option though...  Instant gratification!!

That said, it is also available here on 11 August: http://www.pcaviator.com/shop/viewCategory.php?s=0&c=2, and here http://www.flightsimstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=1035

$20 cheaper than Game Warehouse...   :excited:

Back to Jarkko...

I have FSX, fly a fair bit with it but keep getting annoying freezes (and I need to blow stuff up other than my ... :grr:

DCS: Blackshark is brilliant but need to upgrade my HOTAS as I am getting spikes when flying...   :grr:

Marcus and others have recently helped me get IL-2 working on my pc so I am relearning that one.

I'll probably head down the RoF route soon.  It sounds like our tastes may be similar
