CoD4 Modern warfare REVIEW by friskey.
« on: November 08, 2007, 10:49:20 pm »
I have now sat constantly for the past six hours playing this in single player.

I have a few things to say, but i will start with, Fecking `ell this is a bloody awesome game.

Action, graphics, action and oh...... action.
I simply love it.

For you who have played it... you know... you who wanna play it..... GET IT.
I mean.... The first sniper mission..... I was following Googs.(Dirtyv)yes i am sure it is him. he sound just like him. That is as far as i have gone now(need a break) but hell..... what a mission.

It is hard to give it any place i think.... it is on its own.... it is not a simulator(ArmA) but not like the other CoD games either. yes it is straight following a storyline and that is what you do.
But this story i do like. And it gets more intreaging as you go along. Things happen that you did not think would. And so on...........
The game looks bloody awesome. Graphics, effects, lights, shadows. everything looks smooth and good.
I have the game set on fairly high settings and run about from 30-50 frames. in this you do not need more than that. It is still smooth if you should run into lower FPS than that.

I will get into the Multiplayer section of the game as soon as i have finished the SP version of it.
But i can see that this is going to be huge in MP as well.

I have been waiting for it, and it was all worth it.
I have not played a better Action FPS ever. And i have played a few.
Some might come and say that it is not reality and this and that.

Well, for reality we have RO and OPF and not least ArmA. They are all very nice aswell, but not the same.
This is in the class of GRAW 1 and 2 only alot more action and fast-pace like.
Close court inner city warfare tend to be just that.

If you wanna compare it to something(or just let you guys get the picture) i will compare it to the movie BLACKHAWK DOWN. When they wanna exit the city after securing the subjects.
That is what it feels like. You will know it you have played the demo.

Yes you can get enough some time, and suddenly a new mission is ahead where you need to sneak as much as possible and take out all silently. It is just perfect.

Run to the shops boys.. when you are not racing, this is what you should be doing.

Short review of the online version.

Yes yes yes yes. thats about all you need to know.

There is alot more to cover of course, but Team deathmatch(you know this one) is damn fun here, and calls for tactic thinking. runners seem to be killed really fast here, and that is a good thing.
It helps to have a guy cover you if ya wanna run. Tactics is not always needed though in TDmatch as you are suppose to kill as and optin and not capture or destroy anything.

Headquarters is more in the line of seek n destroy and calls for tactic thinking and performing.
It is really nice.

The maps are not to big but big enough for the gameplay.
Size like BF maps maybe, but graphics is boooooooming and frames equally. this is actually fps friendly more than Bf2(on my machine it is)

Ranking is as BF and ET QW and the rest. Points for being in the match. more if your team wins, 10 pr kill and extra points for assist kills.
Ranking as in Marine/army thing U.S.

No vehicles unfortunately, but you are a trooper and thats that.(sniper, demolitions, assault, special ops, heavy machinery) think i got them all there.

Anyway. I can see this taking over alot of Battlefield players. First of all you have a great singleplayer game. and that is very good aswell.
I can see my self playing this more online though.

Oh and Jarkko.. when you wanna stab somebody... all you do is pin them with your assault rifle, and run towards them, close enough you click your assigned button for meele attack and you slice them down silent and nice.(or sneak if you like that)

I have said it before and i will say it many times again. This is the best FPS i have played since Graw and GRAW2, and i like this better in some ways.
Mods will come of course(there is even an option in the server filters, if you want filter with or without mods) wich is promising.

Report for duty soldiers, you are wanted.

I purchased the game tonight.  Downloading now. :)  After two hours it's only fifty percent.  I can't wait to give it a shot tomorrow.

After trying it out, I'll echo what Cato has said.  :)

In simple terms.  This game is awesome!  It is not a sim, but it's damned good!  A few things that caught me and brought the quality of the game to my attention.  From the first shot I was so deep into this thing that I didn't even realize there was music playing until my wife came in.  She thought I was watching a war movie. lol  So for starters, the sound in this game is great!

The biggest selling factor for me is the smoothness, and finished look of the game itself.  On my old machine running a P4, 2 Gig of Ram, and an old 256MB video card I get great frame rates with a decent amount of eye candy.  This game loads quickly, and runs great.  It looks much better than BF2, and runs much better on my old machine.

I've only played a couple missions, but I can see myself spending more time with this one.  It's the first shooter since RO that really got my heart pumping.  And I haven't even tried it online yet!  I'll post more on that aspect later.

Excellent screen shots Jeff.

I find myself deeply involved with single player action in this game.  It's the first time since before the internet that this has happened.  It's a fantastic game.  Even at the high price, I'm glad I bought it.

Now... when do we have a little SJ battle?  Maybe Jett could get something together with the HLC where we could practice with them.

I've been sucked in by this game for sure.  I just spent three straight hours playing...  :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: I never do that anymore.

The damned thing is just so... so... it just pulls you in.  I actually got emotional when the bomb went off, and my chopper went down. (Leaving out the details for those who haven't played it) ;)  What a fun, and well thought out shooter.  The single player is tops.

Guess I won't be getting this one. Oh well.

My crashes were only when going either from the beginning trailor to the menu screen or when in game and coming out to the menu screen. If I let the trailor play all the way through then I could start the game. But if I hit my mouse or esc it would crash. Then in game if I died and was coming out to menu's...bammm crash!!!!

The fix was to go into the game directory and in the Miles folder rename the mssmp3.asi to .bik

Now it runs fine. This is the demo I talking about.

Just finished beating the game.  I have to say I was sad to see it end.  Feels like I just started. :(  Only choice now is to fire it up on the most difficult setting and have another run.

The Single Player is way too short....As is 'Death From Above' and unlocking Arcade Mode for finishing the game seems a bit :extend:   Well....Just as well it looks good.

Also, now I'm not knocking it, but the unlocks in MP are a bit :innocent: I mean, maybe it's having played BF2 and still got years to go before my next rank, but I've seen way too many people who are top rank....seems like there are easy ways to get the points ;)

Hi fellow soldiers    :salute:

Heres a highlight video of COD4: Modern Warfare fully maxed out in the games 'Display Option' window from my new 'Big Gun' computer.

For those who have played the game don't need to download it - but feel free to anyway.

For those who haven't seen the game or maybe need a little persuation to go buy it - then click here...

http://simjunkies.org/fileshare/hecta/Cod4_Highlights.wmv  (HD 720 - 64.5meg)

There is no in-game sounds (but I added some music) cause my Fraps doesn't like my on-board sounds apparently - but I will rectify this in the near future.

Although the game is short - it all depends how you play it - I found it utterly awsome.

ENJOY!!!!

Cheers
Jeff

Oddly enough, ive fallen little bit in love with this game after i got it for xbox360.. the multiplayer is fun, fast paced.. and it suites gamepad way better than keyboard/mouse.. Keyboard is horribly unergonomic and unconvenient device for these fast shooter games.. gamepad works a treat, and effortlessly (and ache free also). Single player is still utter crap and as fun as pushing nails into your eyeballs, but multiplayer is damn fun.. In fact.. im enjoying it so much ordered COD5, which is apparently the same deal.. rather crap single player combined with great multiplayer.. im interested in the coop modes also, killing nazi zombies sounds like fun. :)

I wonder, how come nobody has invented trackball gamepad yet?

I am playing this fairly often.  It's something I can get in when I just have a few minutes here and there.  I play mostly COD5.  But I do it on the PC. I play with a "Tactical Squad"  their server is heavily moderated.  You must move 'tactically'.  Crouch or walk with sights upright.  Run only under fire or cover to cover.  No hip shooting, or bunny hopping.  It's actually a real good time.

If we could get enough interest I would like to get the ball rolling on an SJ shooter.  Not necessarily COD, but perhaps ARMA2 when it hits the shelves.  We would have to do something separate to fund a server though.

How many here actually play shooters regularly?

Well, gonna get COD5 in about half an hour (for xbox360).. i reckon the HC mode search and destroy will be my cup of tea, at least in the fourth it is.(havent seen any bunny hopping on xbox btw, its in fact very enjoyable online, especially compared to the poor single player)

Ill be in for Arma2, possibly the new operation flashpoint could be a contender when its out!

I have scrolled by some review of ArmA II. Preview beta test.

Some lines that caught my attention is.

" ArmA with better graphics "
" Ai seems better for cover and attack, but in open field they act the same "
" Vehicle and planes/heli textures looks amazing "
" VERY HEAVY on the computer "

I will get it anyway, but I will possibly get the OFP2 aswell. It could very well be some competition here. I am not xpecting it, but I am hoping....

Well, it has been know since OFP that the community is the guys that finishes the game... The developers have made a VERY GOOD game engine. Gotta remember that they use it for military training. Releasing it as game really seems to come in 2nd place.  Hope OFP 2 will work as promised. :)

I didn't know you guys were playing.  I enjoy the zombies too.  Know a few more who would be up for it.  If you want a good tactical server for online play I can put you onto the server with guys I've joined up with.

Just don't hate me when you see me wearing another tag.  :dunno:  I wanted to an SJ group, and wore the [SJ] tag for a long time.  But I thought I was the only one who enjoyed the COD series, so I joined up with a few people who seemed to have their shit together in COD.
